Jimi Hendrix - Angel

Black Sabbath - After Forever

Son House - John the Revelator

Blind Willie Johnson - Anything from album “Dark Was The Night”

I love these songs because they knock you upside the head and remind you to be thankful for what you DO have:

“Blessed” by Martina McBride
“Life’s A Dance” by John Michael Montgomery
“If Tomorrow Never Comes” by Garth Brooks
“Lucky Man” by Montgomery Gentry
“Find Out Who Your Friends Are” by Tracy Lawrence (with Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney)

I also love:

“I Believe” by Diamond Rio
“Forever Young” by Rod Stewart

Too many others to count right now!

“Ordinary Miracle” - Sarah McLachlan
“Unwritten”- Natasha Bedingfield

Oh wow… all of these will be from Flogging Molly because it is my favorite band:

Wanderlust
Because of the line “Dark though, it has been/your old spirit still shines within.” I got in my car after mass one Sunday where I was particularly feeling like a dirtbag, and on the way out my priest grasped my hand and kind of made sure I was paying really good attention and gave me a fatherly pep talk. I nearly shrugged it off until I got in the car, and this line was the first thing to come out of the speakers.

Punch Drunk Grinning Soul
“This punch drunk grinning soul/ in its corner cries ‘no more’/Hey now, stay proud/you were lost on a blue day”

Within a Mile of Home
"Don’t turn your back on me, don’t ever let me down/She said I picked you up each time before you hit the ground.

What’s Left of the Flag
“With madman’s rage they dug our graves/but the dead rise again, you fools.”

And other songs I won’t elaborate on: Grace of God Go I, If I Ever Leave This World Alive, and (No More) Paddy’s Lament.

Yep…I love Flogging Molly…

Someone likes guitar, I’m guessing.
Yep…especially with a heavy blues feel to it…couldn’t think of any Led Zep, SRV of Clapton songs offhand that fit this OP or they would have been included too…

Undo What I’ve Become-Rush of Fools
I am Wholly Yours-David Crowder Band
Oh My Soul- David Crowder Band
Amazing Grace-Chris Tomlin (My Chains Are Gone)
Jesus Bring the Rain-Mercy Me
All of these are played on Spirit 105.3 FM
Hey, I listen to Spirit 105.3 all the time! A fellow Washingtonian, perhaps?

Also, I like:
Josh Groban: “You Raise Me Up” “To Where You Are”
Carrie Underwood: “So Small” “Jesus Take the Wheel”
Rascal Flatts: “My Wish”
Michael Buble: “Lost”
Tobymac (not exactly secular): "Boomin’ "
LeeAnn Womack: “I Hope You Dance”

I’m sure there’s more, I just can’t remember…

“Morning has Broken” by Cat Stevens (recorded by many others as well, but his is the only version I’ve heard)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morning_Has_Broken

“The Parting Glass” by Shaun Davey/Liam Ó Maonlaí (from the movie Waking Ned Devine).

Have a listen here (for the lyrics, click “more” on the right hand side under “About This Video”):

youtube.com/watch?v=xDB87o-njFQ :irish3: It takes a minute or two for the lyrics to begin.

More to come, probably 🙂

Hi, Yes, I’m from Des Moines, Washington. Have you heard “Oh My Soul! You never let go.” By the David Crowder Band yet? It’s so beautiful with the piano. It really is helping me get through some tough times. I also love the song that goes "Hold me Jesus. I’m shaking like a leaf. You’ve been King of my glory. Won’t you be my prince of peace. I’ve hit my head against so many walls and I’m falling down, falling on my knees. By Rich Mullins. He was on his way to becoming Catholic right before he died. And don’t you think Mercy Me -“Jesus Bring the Rain” and “So Long Self” seem to be coming closer to Catholic theology. I also loved Sarah McGlaughlin’s “The Saints Come Marching In and I Want to Be Like Them”. But I noticed they stopped playing it even though everyone loved it. Just too Catholic I guess.

Sorry, “When the Saints Come Marching In” is by Sarah Groves.

Kiri - by Monorail
Host of the Seraphim- by Dead Can Dance
light before we land- by The Delgados

U2 does not count! They are probably the least secular band on the radio. Most of their lyrics have allusions to the cross or Christ or God in some manner. I listened to a whole lot of U2 when I was in the conversion process 2 years ago. Achtung Baby and the Joshua Tree are two of the most spiritually uplifting original albums that I have ever had the blessing to listen to.

I’ve heard this song many times over the last few weeks and it just hit me this morning (on the way to work at 1:45 a.m.!) how pro-life this song is (perhaps unintentionally):

This song, “Small-Town Southern Man”, was written by the singer about his father (not the first song he’s written about his dad) and the line that jumped out at me this morning was this:

First there came four pretty daughters
For this small-town southern man
Then a few years later came another
A boy, he wasn’t planned

As I said, that boy who “wasn’t planned” is the singer and songwriter.

Alan Jackson.

(… and now you know THE REST OF THE STORY.)

“Forever”, “Fields of Athenry” and “Never Forget” by the Dropkick Murphys

I have to add the duo Seals and Crofts, especially their song ‘Summer Breeze’

Bon Jovi - Livin’ On A Prayer
Whitesnake - Here I Go Again
Neil Sedaka - Stairway To Heaven
Benny Goodman - When The Saints Go Marching In

Numerous songs by Perry Como.
(I don’t know if he counts as a secular artist. He catered to both the secular and Christian audience)
