Favourite Catholic Pope

Some say comparisons are odious but I disagree in this case. Naming our favourite Pope will reveal more about us than the one we choose.
And those of you who are more well-informed can choose from a wider range, even pre 20th Century.
I am most familiar with Pope Francis, having reverted to Catholicism during his papacy. I’m still learning about the others. My first reaction to Pope Benedict was “too starchy and old school”. But I am starting to change on that one. I have to respect his incredible scholarship, even I don’t fully grasp his view. John Paul , I really need to research. This guy sounds fascinating. John XXIII (the one during Vatican II) another interesting character.
I will choose Pope Francis, only because that is the one I know best. But I say that with some reservation. He really does come across well. He passes on the love. Benedict may have been loving, but he didn’t convey that as well as Pope Francis . in my opinion. One slight criticism of Pope Francis, if I am allowed to say: he needs to spell out the detail, and not be afraid to deliver “tough love” encyclicals. This might be where Benedict was stronger. Just my view on this btw.
 
i’m a huge fan of pope linus; he had a tough act to follow…

JPII for me, but I admit my knowledge of pre-20th century Popes is quite lacking.

Anyone with a good book recommendation on the history of the Papacy?
 
I’ve never had a pope I didn’t like. 😁

For me they each embody one of the theological virtues.

St. John Paul II embodied hope, Benedict embodied faith and Pope Francis embodies charity.

No shame in stating your favourite Pope. No, it’s not an indirect criticism of the others. It just means you favour a certain style of leadership or way of communicating.
 
All the Popes have brought something different to the table, it’s difficult to have a “favorite” per say.

Although I must admit, lately I have spent a lot of time reflecting on the lawyer turned prophet.
 
2nd Leo XIII… Rerum Novarum is the most important Church document of the 20th Century IMHO
