Hello everyone, I was just wondering if there was anyone who would like to share their favourite songs that are sung at mass. I am looking to expand my iPod playlist and would like some more Church music. I already have quite a bit, but I am sure there is much more I do not have. I already have plenty of Gregorian Chant though, so none of that please:D . Thanks in advance.

Two pieces that I’ve been listening to a lot are:

-If Ye Love Me: Thomas Tallis

Ok, so the above aren’t actually hymns, but they’re amazing choral pieces and are incredibly beautiful!

When planning liturgies, I have drawn from these songs. They are beautiful, doctrinally sound, in keeping with the Church’s stance on music and easy to sing.
 
If this is your iPod playlist, maybe you are after suggestions of particular recordings rather than just particular hymns?

(There are some truly pedestrian recordings out there that are OK as hymn tune teaching tools but no way would I listen to them otherwise. Conversely, I have some terrific recordings of some hymns in styles that might not/would not be appropriate for use at Mass, for example Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band’s “Sing Lustily and With Good Courage”.)

benedictgal, you really can’t go wrong with your list. Our parish music director uses a lot of those as well and they work very nicely. “Holy God, We Praise Thy Name” is a real congregation-rouser.

I always find it particularly sweet to hear an entire congregation of children singing “Holy God We Praise Thy Name” with the same vigor that the “old crowd” at Sunday 8 am mass sing it. It’s truly a “Catholic” hymn.

Those are the hymns that gets my liturgical juices flowing…👍
 
A song called “I Know that my Redeemer Lives”. I think there are several versions… but the lyrics to the one I’m talking about are below. I found this song on a CD by Catholic Artist… Robert Kochis.

"I know that my Redeemer lives, the One who calls me home.
I long to see God face to face, to see with my own eyes.

Refrain: I know that my Redeemer lives, that I shall rise again.
I know that my Redeemer lives, that I shall rise again.

I know that I shall one day see the goodness of the Lord,
when God will wipe away our tears, and death will be no more.

I also love the beautiful “Panis Angelicus” (I believe the translation is “Bread of Angels”). And TWO versions of the “Ave Maria”… Schubert’s and Gounod’s. GORGEOUS! I can’t listen to them, without weeping.
