Or you can also include chants, choral music, or Christian pop 🙂

What are some of your favourites and why?

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
E’en though it be a cross that raiseth me;
Still all my song shall be nearer, my God, to Thee,

Though like the wanderer,
the sun gone down,
Darkness be over me, my rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I’d be nearer, my God, to Thee,

There let the way appear steps unto heav’n;
All that Thou sendest me in mercy giv’n;
Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee,

Then with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs Bethel I’ll raise;
So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee,

I love the version of the tune played by the piano guys linked and I enjoy the visual lyrics. I am also attracted to story of the last song to be played on the Titanic as she was sinking. I wonder how comforting it must have been to have the words of this song brought to mind on that ship “Out of my stony griefs Bethel I’ll raise;/So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee”

Not what my hands have done
Can save my guilty soul;
Not what my toiling flesh has borne
Can make my spirit whole.
Not what I feel or do
Can give me peace with God;
Not all my prayers and sighs and tears
Can bear my awful load.

Thy work alone, O Christ,
Can ease this weight of sin;
Thy blood alone, O Lamb of God,
Can give me peace within.
Thy love to me, O God,
Not mine, O Lord to thee,
Can rid me of this dark unrest
And set my spirit free.

Thy grace alone, O God,
To me can pardon speak;
Thy pow’r alone, O Son of God,
Can this sore bondage break.
No other work, save thine,
No other blood will do;
No strength, save that which is divine,
Can bear me safely through.

I bless the Christ of God;
I rest on love divine;
And with unfalt’ring lip and heart
I call this Saviour mine.
This cross dispels each doubt;
I bury in his tomb
Each thought of unbelief and fear,
Each ling’ring shade of gloom.

I praise the God of grace;
I trust his truth and might;
He calls me his, I call him mine,
My God, my joy, my light.
'Tis he who saveth me,
And freely pardon gives;
I love because he loveth me,
I live because he lives.
(Horatius Bonar)

I found this song so encouraging during a difficult time in my life. I really felt the lyrics. When reading the older hymns I think many of them are better at expressing difficulties and the darkness in our Christian walk as well as the good and wonderful

I asked the Lord that I might grow
In faith, and love, and every grace;
Might more of His salvation know,
And seek, more earnestly, His face.
’Twas He who taught me thus to pray,
And He, I trust, has answered prayer!
But it has been in such a way,
As almost drove me to despair.
I hoped that in some favored hour,
At once He’d answer my request;
And by His love’s constraining pow’r,
Subdue my sins, and give me rest.
Instead of this, He made me feel
The hidden evils of my heart;
And let the angry pow’rs of hell
Assault my soul in every part.
Yea more, with His own hand He seemed
Intent to aggravate my woe;
Crossed all the fair designs I schemed,
Blasted my gourds, and laid me low.
Lord, why is this, I trembling cried,
Wilt thou pursue thy worm to death?
“’Tis in this way, the Lord replied,
I answer prayer for grace and faith.
These inward trials I employ,
From self, and pride, to set thee free;
And break thy schemes of earthly joy,
That thou may’st find thy all in Me.”
(John Newton)

I just love the raw honesty of this song. Certainly in my own life periods of difficulty have been means of grace in my life

Gift of Finest Wheat because Jesus is truly present in The Blessed Sacrament and he truly satisfies the hungry heart.

My favorite hymn is Personent Hodie. This is the setting by Gustav Holst; I like it best because of those crashing octaves the organ does at the beginning. The words, in Latin and English are here. It’s a very old hymn, first appearing in 1582, but thought to be a couple of centuries older.

Gospel song: Doc Watson doing The Ninety and Nine. Makes me cry every time. Yep, I’ve been saved from alcoholism, agnosticism, and sexual sin, in that order. I was “so sick and helpess, and ready to die,” alright.

I love a lot of the old Lutheran hymns, in settings by J.S. Bach - my favorite composer of all time. I’ve always loved “A Mighty Fortress,” even now, even though Martin Luther wrote it. Great words and music.

Now I remember a Maronite hymn dedicated to St Charbel, charming like a Christmas song:
youtube.com/watch?v=Fyn6L1-8Ihg
Another version:
youtube.com/watch?v=f8z-9J89Ty4

On High Annaya Cloister
Saint Charbel lit his lampion
Exalt every chorister
With love and with devotion
O Saint Charbel for us pray

O monk up on a hillside
In your hermitage praying
And from the Redeemer’s side
Love and purity drawing
O Saint Charbel for us pray

This earth you loved so dearly
Labored, planted and watered
With your sweat and blood amply
With roses now is scented
O Saint Charbel for us pray

O Perfect to each brother,
Molded in pure charity,
Let us all press together
In candid fraternity.
O Saint Charbel for us pray

A saint, for God totally,
Who all the world did amaze
Provide for your land wholly,
Saint who among us was raised.
O Saint Charbel for us pray

The cedar of Lebanon,
Calls Saint Charbel and Mary:
Your eyes keep forever on
Lebanon’s mount and prairie.
O Saint Charbel for us pray

In Bka’kafra, still a child
You loved to be secluded,
And prayed to grow undefiled,
Holy, pure and good–minded.
O Saint Charbel for us pray

Day by day with Host and Wine
You meet God in holy Mass
Asking, pleading The Divine
Blessings for us you amass.
O Saint Charbel for us pray

To Charbel we came pilgrims
To gain from his shrine blessing
As we proceed singing hymns,
Graces from his heart seeking.
O Saint Charbel for us pray

Saint Charbel, from your retreat
Look upon your church wholly,
Your sanctity we entreat
Her heart fill with Christ solely.
O Saint Charbel for us pray.

My favourite Catholic Hymn is Here I am Lord (composed by Dan Schutte)

youtube.com/watch?v=6WRfpQKnzns

Here I Am Lord

1…I the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard My people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin My hand will save.
I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send ?

Antiphon
Here I am Lord. Is it I Lord?
I have heard You calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if You lead me.
I will hold Your people in my Heart.

2…I, the Lord of snow and rain. I have borne My people’s pain.
I have wept for live of them, they turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone.
Who will speak My word to them? Whom shall I send ?

Antiphon
Here I am Lord. Is it I Lord?
I have heard You calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if You lead me.
I will hold Your people in my Heart.

3…I the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them, My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide, till their hearts be satisfied.
I will give My Life to them. Whom shall I send?

One of mine is a Lutheran Communion Hymn - ThrbInfant Priest Was Holy Born.
  1. The infant priest was holy born,
    For us unholy and forlorn
    From fleshly temple forth came he,
    Anointed from eternity
  2. This great High Priest in human flesh
    Was icon of God’s righteousness.
    His hallowed torch brought sanctity;
    His hand removed impurity
  3. The holy Lamb undaunted came
    To God’s own alter lit with flame
    While weeping angles hid their eyes,
    This Priest became a sacrifice
  4. But death would not the victor be
    Of Him who hung upon the tree
    He leads us to the Holy Place
    Within the veil before god’s face
  5. The veil is torn, our Priest we see,
    As at the rail on bended knee
    Our hungry mouths from Him receive,
    The bread of immortality
  6. The body of God’s Lamb we eat
    A priestly food and priestly meat;
    On sin parched lips the chalice pours
    His quenching blood that life restores.
  7. With cherubim and seraphim
    Our voices join the endless hymn
    And “Holy, holy, holy” sing
    To Christ, God’s Lamb, our Priest and King

Majesty Worship His Majesty; How Can I Keep From Singing
Majesty, worship his majesty. Unto Jesus be all glory, honor and praise.
Majesty, kingdom authority comes from his throne, unto his own, his anthem raise.
So exalt, lift up on high the name of Jesus.
Magnify, come glorify Christ Jesus, our King.
Majesty. Worship his majesty. Jesus who died. Now glorified. King of all Kings!
(Written by Jack Hayford)

My life flows on in endless song Above earth’s lamentation. I hear the real though far-off hymn That hails a new creation.

No storm can shake my inmost calm, While to the rock I’m clinging. Since Love is Lord of heaven and earth, How can I keep from singing?

It’s been a while since I last heard this sung. I didn’t know the songwriter was catholic

I remember this song on one of Enya’s cassettes:

It’s a lovely one

I love that one from enya. Also i love the hymns:
‘of my life i give to you oh Lord’ & ‘the air i breathe’. I will find the youtube links.

How Great Thou Art
Here I Am Lord
Stille Nacht (I prefer the German)
And, as much as some people hate it, I have a soft spot for On Eagle’s Wings

Oh, wow! I could make a list that goes on for days!

-Any of Bach’s settings of the Reformation hymns
-Anything Ralph Vaughn Williams
-Any hymn set to “Jupiter” or Parry’s “Jerusalem” (those Anglicans have the right idea when it comes to church music!)

When it comes to classic tunes, I am particularly fond of:
When it comes to non-traditional hymns, “Hope for Resolution” is a favorite, but “Wana Baraka” takes the cake for me. The translation from Swahili is something to the effect of “They have a gift -victory and love- for those who in fellowship come to Jesus.” It’s one of those songs that tells that story, even if one doesn’t understand the lyrics.

A Lutheran in a hymnody thread is like a fish IN water. 🙂

“For All Thy Saints” (thanks to our Anglican siblings)
“The Church’s One Foundation” (ditto)
“Lord Keep Us Steadfast” (my favorite from ML)
“On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand” (esp. to the Navy Hymn)
“Ah, Holy Jesus” (my favorite Holy Week hymn)
“What Child is This” (my favorite Christmas hymn because of the second verse)
Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and *** are feeding?
Good Christians, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.
Nails, spear shall pierce Him through,
The cross be borne for me, for you.
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

Lots more.

Love all of those! For me, the earworm of hymns has to be Thy Strong Word. Now that I mentioned it, it will be playing in my head all day.

Thy strong Word did cleave the darkness;
At thy speaking it was done.
For created light we thank Thee
While thine ordered seasons run
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Praise to thee who light dost send!
Alleluia without end!

AMEN!

It is a favorite within the LCMS, particularly the colleges. My daughter graduated from a Concordia school 2 years ago, and it was their favorite.
