A couple of faves, Hail Holy Queen (or Salve Regina), Immaculate Mary, and As I Kneel Before You.

Yo! Just wanted to share my favourite Marian hymns and ask about yours!
These are my two very favourites atm and I would be sad if you had never heard them:
The Dominican Salve Regina (or Salve Regina OP) youtube.com/watch?v=Nzu_mXeQNyM
Regina Caeli Laetare youtube.com/watch?v=yzMa0qzwagA

Actually, Marian songs should be ok, too. I personally really love Mary did you know- it usually gives me shivers~
Technically (and musically) these are antiphons rather than hymns… but I would have to say the solemn version of the Salve Regina (monastic solemn tone), and the solemn Alma Redemptoris mater are my favourite Marian antiphons.

My favourite Marian hymn would be the solemn version of the Ave Maris Stella (this one is properly a hymn).

Kontakion of the Annunciation (and of the Akathist Hymn): youtube.com/watch?v=QrMExgRWkBY
To thee, the Champion Leader, do I offer thanks of victory:
O Theotokos, thou who hast delivered me from terror.
But as thou that hast that power invincible,
O Theotokos, thou alone can set me free.
From all forms of danger free me and deliver me,
That I may cry unto thee: Hail, O Bride without bridegroom!

Ave Maria O Maiden O Mother

By far my favorite!
The chorus has a stunning crescendo that moves me every time I hear it sung!
It’s from the old St. Gregory Hymnal.
Fabulous.

I’m afraid I don’t really know the difference 😊

But duuude all of these are so great! I really like the Ave Maris Stella and As I kneel before you, beautiful. And now my youtube suggestions are a bunch of nice songs, yay!

Hymns (of the Divine Office) are written with a poetic structure and repetitive melody. The two most common are the iambic dimeter and the sapphic strophes.

In the iambic dimeter, each strophe is made up of 4 octosyllabic verses, so a meter of 8.8.8.8. The iambic dimeter as used for hymns of the Liturgy of the Hours dates back to the Ambrosian era (around the 4th century); example appropriate for this time of the year:

Veni Creator Spiritus

Sapphic strophes have 3 verses of 11 syllables with a break after the 5th syllable, followed by a last verse of 5 syllables (the adonic verse), so a meter of 11.11.11.5. These are mainly from the Carolingian era (around the 9th century). Here is an example, the current hymn for the Office of Readings/Vigils at Christmas (there is a more traditional Vigils hymn that was used prior to publishing the Liber Hymnarius in 1983… there’s some controversy over that)

Candor aeterne

Antiphons, traditionally, are a refrain as part of psalmody. The Marian antiphons are somewhat different in that they aren’t associated to psalmody. So they’re not antiphons in the true sense, but not hymns either. They have a free melody, not associated to any repeating meter. In the Salve Regina for instance, the strophes and sections of strophes have a varying number of syllables.

Immaculate Mary is my favorite Marian hymn. I remember the first time I heard it at Mass, I thought nothing of it. Then when I listened to it sung by the Benedictines of Mary Queen of Apostles I grew to appreciate the beauty of this hymn, as well when it was sung repeatedly at Mass. Now I sing it daily as part of my personal devotions, and this is one of those songs where you actually want to be loud when singing it. It’s because of this song that I would love to learn how to read notes and sing “properly;” I love these traditional Catholic hymns.

Much better than those Protestant songs which dominate 90% of all what is sung at Mass.

Is there a Latin version of this hymn?

There are countless number of Antiphones and Hymns to the Virgin that I love some of them are

Plain Chant
  1. The 4 Marian Antiphones
    A. Salve Regina
    B. Regina Caeli
    C. Alma Redemptoris Mater
    D. Salve Regina Caelorum
  2. Magnificat (Ton royal)
  3. Salve Mater Misericordiae
Others
  1. Salve Regina (Propora)
  2. Stabat Mater (Pergolesi)

Thanks for the website. It’s beautiful.:harp:
Another favorite is “Ava Maria,” it brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it sung beautifully. I think it in English while they sing it in Latin. I love “Were You There” also. God Bless, Memaw
