It’s Pope St. Pius X’s papal coat of arms from the Vatican website. His name was Joe, too, before he became pope (well, Giuseppe, which is Italian for Joseph).

It was actually the painted bird avatar, I’m a bird nerd. Your new avatar is also very good. It reads well, has a pleasant color scheme, you can’t go wrong with angels and I love the bold brush strokes.
