Favourite Saint and why?

As I was reading Tobit, I was struck by how the archangel St. Raphael is the perfect saint for parents. He guided and protected Tobit’s son and I often pray for his guidance and protection for my children.

I am fascinated by St. Denis who carried his own decapitated head and kept preaching.

Other than that, I enjoy reading about saints and may pray for their aid collectively, but I guess I don’t have a great devotion to any one.

As I recall, I think it was one particular Pope who preached she was, and many Catholics assumed he must know what he was talking about.

However, many do interpret the seven demons possessing her as representing the Seven Deadly Sins, and certainly Lust is one of those sins.

However, most prostitutes, even now, do not turn to the “world’s oldest profession” out of a wish to indulge their lusts, but out of desperate financial straits, and I think most of the “johns”, not to mention many of the people who have recreational sex for free, are actually more culpable than most prostitutes.

That’s not even mentioning the prostitutes who are victims of sexual trafficking, those I see as victims of sexual assault, and as blameless as victims of rapists who don’t bother to pay a pimp for the pleasure.

I do think this general idea that the Magdalene was a sinner who was redeemed is still relevant. And she certainly had a place of honor in the early Church as a woman, so I like that about her as well.

However, my favorite saint is Saint Gianna Molla, not just because of her courageous sacrifice to save her daughter, but because she is someone I can relate to, as a woman who lived in the world, even had a paid job, even wore pants.

I must admit I find the many female saints who are martyrs and cloistered nuns, to be admirable, but not as approachable.

Exactly.

Who knows exactly what she did, the fact is that if you have 7 demons possesing your soul, you are in very bad shape.

I cast no judgements on her.

I first heard about her alleged prostitution in the fundamentalist protestant circles. Seemed to be almost a consensus until recent times.

Gosh, Nelka. Every year on Jan 1st I choose a saint to help me through the year. For the last several years it has been St. Joseph for me because of his care of the Holy Family. And it seems that throughout the year other saints jump in this boat with me. I’ll see or read or hear something that I want to know more about… like St. Francis’ prayer Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. I want to learn it by heart and say it daily. So during the day I try to invoke the help of St. Joseph and St. Francis to help pray for me and get me through this day. This year Soon to be saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta has jumped in because of her humility and service to the poor that I would like to emulate…

I’m up to about 10 saints already this year… so far. Daily I try to say their names and ask them to pray for me… When January comes again I start over. Some of the same saints join me and new ones attract me for certain reasons. I enjoy the company on this dusty road…

A powerful Saint…I’d love to here mpre about it if you don’t mind? If it’s personal that’s fine. A relative of mine was at a healing Mass last year and the priest had gotten a relic Holy oil of St Pio for the Mass. I can remember them saying When the priest was anointing my relative with the Holy oil they could feel something going through there whole body! Amazing Saint.
