Oh wow, how could I forget to add “The Strife is O’er” to my list!!!

i like it because of the powerful Bass entry, followed by other voices melodically, it gives me joy especially when i fill lifted from any problem that has been troubling me. it gives me joy, it is a celebrant song. praise God.

How often do you spontaneously quote your pastor’s homily? More likely you will remember some hymn. These are good to remember:

For All the Saints
Fairest Lord Jesus
O Worship the King
All Creatures if Our God and King
And Can It Be?

To Jesus Christ Our Sovereign King
Come Holy Ghost

and many more. Of the more contemporary songs (can’t call many of them “hymns”!), sorry but most of them are gut- wrenchingly awful! A few work as songs for meditation, but not in the liturgy. Interestingly, I was looking through some songs I have from my days in InterVarsity and a Southern Baptist church I was a member of. Most of those songs are much better than many in the OCP songbook.

One of my favorite worship albums (yes, an LP!) was “Courts of the King” featuring Phil Keaggy and members of the band that plays on Keaggy’s “Emerging”. The community was called Love Inn (hey, it was the 70s!) and the worship leader was Ted Sandquist.

Guess what, we sang it today at Mass. :extrahappy: It was the recessional hymn.
 
My new parish has the most beautiful “Gloria,” the kids walk around singing it all week.

I also like “Come Holy Ghost,” and “Hail, Holy Queen” and “O Come All Ye Faithful”
 
There’s a lot of songs I don’t like and I’ve toyed with making a “Don’t you DARE sing these songs at my funeral” list.

I don’t like How Great Thou Art at all, and I blush to admit it, but I don’t care for Ave Maria (ducks and runs)

In English, I like Holy God We Praise Thy Name and Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent. In Latin - Ave Verum Corpus, Attende Domine, and Tantum Ergo.

Do you mean the Schubert setting? Don’t blush… it’s ok that you don’t care for it. 🙂 You know, although I do LOVE the piece, I actually prefer it in the German poetic text sung in a lieder recital (which it was originally written as a piece of sacred German lieder) rather than in church. That’s just because I’ve sung it for almost every wedding and many funerals (although not as many) in almost any Catholic church. Even protestant brides have started using it for their wedding services, so I’ve sung it for many Protestant weddings as well. So, naturally, because I hear it and sing it so often, I would rather hear a different setting of the “Ave Maria”. We chose a setting by Gabriel Faure when we got married. 🙂

But I love this song. It makes me grateful that God “gathered me in” to His Church, and it reminds me to pray for of all my Protestant relatives and friends who are still outside the Church.

I’ve been trying to resurrect a song we sang at Mass in college (30 yrs ago) called Birth - very simple, but can’t find it and can’t remember all the lyrics. It began

In my mother’s womb You have knit me, my Lord
You have chosen me and Your eyes planted my seed - I think

Anyone know it?
