FDA OKs First Embryonic Stem Cell Research Trial on Humans, Despite Concerns

Washington, DC – The Obama administration has approved the bid by cloning company Geron to undertake the first trial involving the use of embryonic stem cells in humans. They have never been used before in people because the cells cause tumors and have immune system rejection issues when tried in animals.

Unfortunately, the problems that are rarely mentioned are: rejection by the body of foreign material, requiring drugs to sppress the body’s natural response. The tendency for such tissues to form teratomas, a cancerous mass.

This is a good example of how sometimes investors, not scientists, call the shots. Investor’s Business Daily wrote how ESTs are not getting out of the lab. And with nothing even in trials, the money spigot may just get shut off.

The political angle is disturbing, but we’ll see I guess.

God bless,
Ed

They actually have been used in humans, and if you’ve got the coin you can receive such treatment abroad. The results I’ve seen have been mostly positive in the anecdotal sense- obviously more study is required, which is what is happening now.
