I have similar issues, stemming from an incident oncd when I decided to cook up a pound of bacon whilst shirtless one sunday when my wife was visitng her family, and got repeatedly scalded by hot grease on tender spots.

Oh, a fear of flying.

Nvmd.

You could drive to Seattle and take a cruise ship to Alaska:)

Mexico and C.A. are reachable by land, though with difficulty.

Europe and Australia, yeah you’d be out of luck 🙂

Yes. Actually hubby and I have thought of doing that some summer, to Alaska, one could actually drive all the way to Alaska, though it would be time consuming.

This post is timely for me. I am also afraid of flying.

I live in Michigan and last year had a conference in California. I took the train and it was wondeful. It also took 2 days there and 2 days back. This year, my husband is going with me and we have to fly. We don’t leave until the end of February and I’m already nervous about it.

I have had thoughts like the OP about sinning against God because of my fear of flying as well. Thank you all for kindly addressing the OP (and those of us who have this fear) that it is not sinful but physical.

I used to fly a lot for my job in my 20s. Once I hit 30 and had two of my three kids, something happened and the “terrify to fly” feelings took over. So much that I’ve actually walked out of the airport twice and rented cars to drive home.

When I fly in late February, I’m going to remind myself of what a pilot once said to a man sitting next to me. We were flying to Minneapolis and I was seated between a pilot hitching a ride back home and a very frightened man. The pilot explained every sound we heard and made it very clear to this man, (and me though I wasn’t afraid to fly at the time) that those people in the cockpit want to go home and see their families as much as you do. They’ll do anything to keep the plane safe.

Now, I just need to get over my fear of being stuck with 200 people on a tarmac for hours. I hate being confined.

Good luck to you, OP.

If you have plenty of time and money, there is still a regular Cunard liner from New York to Southampton. From Southampton you can get the train to London and get to France on the Eurostar, from where there is a good rail network across Europe. Here is a very good website run by a man who dislikes flying about how to get just about anyway by train/boat. Some places are more difficult than others, but most of the world is doable.

Thanks, thanks very much everyone, I have a lot of relief in my heart and confidence in God’s love (even if he may be a little disappointed).

I guess what gets me is I wanted to spirituality grow and mature in God’s love. How can I teach my kids during their time of their anxiety to “pray, hope and not worry” if they ever found out about my problem and call me a hypocrite?
God made us all who we are, and He doesn’t make mistakes. Each of us will have our own struggles, challenges, crosses to deal with, and we all deal with them the best we can. Christ prayed not to be crucified to the point His sweat dripped off Him like blood- God answered His prayer by sending an angel to strengthen Him.

Good advice is good advice, even if we have trouble following it ourselves.

It may, but actually a lot of pilots have a fear of heights. Personally I think it is often related to a sense of lack of control. This would make sense from my experience where my anxieties spring from a sense of lack of control. What has helped me tremendously is to realize I do often lack control and to be at peace with that. But also sometimes I do have control where I otherwise might think I don’t. The serenity prayer is helpful:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.
I’m not so much afraid of the height, its the voice urging me to jump.

Did go skydiving once, just to give into the voice and it was fun. (If you ever do this, go the ‘accelerated free fall’ route so you’re on your own once the chute opens vice lashed to an instructor).

I am not per se afraid of heights nor flight, but will never skydive. Facing danger for its own sake has no appeal for me. We will be closer to death than we need, and wholly against our will.
