Fear of sin

I’ve been freed from Mortal Sin recently thanks to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, but I’m afraid I’ll mess up again soon. I never get to go to confession often, though I would like to go every month, and this leads me to be in Mortal Sin most of the time. I’m afraid I will fail again. Is there anything I can do to make sure I don’t? I try to pray every night and ask for the strength to reject sin, but sometimes it doesn’t work. Is there a foolproof way that one of you used?
 
What do you mean prayer doesn’t work? You have a free will. Unless somebody had a shot gun to your head you did not have to sin, it was a choice. And even if someone had a shotgun to your head and told you to commit a mortal sin, for the love of God you are suppose to die rather than do it. (they are called martyrs). Now this might have sounded crazy, but it’s the truth. Prayer works! Take care, I care. Brenda :confused:

My prayers are with you brother. I understand. It’s horrible. The fear of dying is so hard as well, as I was certain i would die in mortal sin. Such a horrible struggle.
I used to struggle with horrible mortal sin and I hated dragging myself to confession. Yes, of course I was repentant and never ever wanted to sin again, but inevitably I did… once even in the same day. Sin had its hands on my throat. I think I went to almost every priest in the diocese because I didn’t want to confess it to one priest.
But, that’s exactly what I ended up doing. One priest, who was my only confessor. And every time I fell into sin, I would go to confession as quickly as possible, (within 24 hours).
It’s only God’s grace that helps us. I know that praying to Our Lady and asking for her help as well was good. Definitely. When I was tempted, I prayed Hail Mary’s until the temptation went away.
The absolute joy of being free of that sin is wonderful, so wonderful. Yes of course, the temptation comes up from time to time… but it’s quickly crushed, by the grace of God.
Then there will be other struggles, but at least you know the way…

That’s not what I meant. I meant that at times I’m so weak that even if I sit there and pray until the temptation is gone, I still sometimes fail. I know it’s not the failure of the prayers, but my own failure. I was just asking if there was a way that was foolproof.

I’m not afraid of the consequences. I accept the consequences fully. I’m afraid to sin because I don’t want to offend Jesus and fall into Mortal Sin again. You’re theory that “people who are afraid of sin, don’t sin” is contradictory to the Bible, which plainly states even the most holy person sins everyday. Look up Saint Augustine. He was very close to Jesus and he still had a hard time with sexual sin.
 
Dear Sinner, Jesus, who is gentle and humble of heart, showed me his mercy. When He wasn’t in my life he was ony a judge who i thought couldn’t possibly love me. So i hid in darkness. But once i new He loved me, i came into His light. When i sin now i realize He is looking for progress not perfection.so i don;t beat myself up too badly. It does no good. I look more at what i should do. Not what I shouldn’t do. He has been so gentle and forgiving and he is God. I play god when I am not as gentle and forgivinging. This is a greater sin. Peace of Christ be with you.

I am one of the greatest sinners in the world probably. Maybe I didn’t express myself very well. I used to have a hard time as well, and repeated the same sin over and over again. Then I realised that I simply wasn’t doing my best to resist that sin. When I read in the bible about being luke warm, I realised that I loved doing what I was doing and that my faith was not very strong, and as hard as it was I stopped doing the thing that I was doing. I made up my mind that if I truly loved God and hated the sin it shouldn’t be so difficult to stop. The more I prayed the more I started to hate that sin. Not to say that I will never do it again but I haven’t for a very long time.(I pray I don’t) I also bought a St. Michael’s metal and wear mymetal and brown scapular all of the time except for when I take a shower or bath, and believe it or not that helps me a lot. St. Michael is a powerful angel, talk to him about the temptations of the Devil, he will surely help you. God be with you. Brenda

It’s something I’d call an addiction, yes. Some people call it a “habit” because there’s no side-effects if I stop doing it, but I highly disagree. An addiction is something in which you must do. A habit is like cursing, where you say it on accident. An addiction is something that attacks you like a devil everyday. Something that will drive your mind and body nuts every second of the day. Unfortunately, I have an addiction. But, the good news is, I haven’t complied to my sinful urges since Saturday (That’s when I went to confession), so hopefully that shows some progress.
 
I have had the same issue. The fear of mortal sin is a strong deterrent but I find that if I am slipping back I immediately start saying a Hail Mary… it works well for me. I have loved the Blessed Mother since I was very little and it is my favorite prayer and since The Blessed Virgin was sinless she is a good role model. I also find that if I do slip and commit a mortal sin I pray to God that I do not die before I can go to Confession. I find that it is an embarrassment to have to confess the same sin over and over again to the same priest so that acts as a deterrent also.

I always remember that many suffered for the Catholic faith and that denial is an important part of being Catholic.

I have heard that keeping a Rosary in one’s pocket also works.

I will pray for you.

I’ve tried saying Hail Mary’s. It works 99.99% of the time. Problem is, sometimes I’m already persuaded by the devil, so even if temptation is gone I think of the pleasure sin will grant me, and I do it anyway.

Confession is commonly known as the best way, but as explained before, I rarely go. It is rather unfortunate, but true. Hopefully I can convince my parents to go every month.

I always have a Rosary hanging on my side by a belt loop. It’s something I picked up from my dad. I also have a big crucifix hanging around my neck by a chain. It’s a very special crucifix. It has blue and just above Jesus’ head there is a Miraculous Medal inside of it. It works, but, as previously stated, sometimes it simply doesn’t work. Or, more specifically, I don’t actually try.

I think whenever one is caught in a loop it’s important to make some kind of fundamental change to your lifestyle that gets you out of that mode of thought and habit.

A change of scenery, a retreat, a vacation, something that during that time you can develop a new habit of virtue, and train yourself to react properly.

Even reorganizing the furniture in the house can get in the way of a habit, and cause you to act differently.

Actual exterior changes help beat habits.

Less reliance on the material too, and more reliance on God. The less we own, the more grace there is.

This, along with of course, paying attention to what leads to the habit, the way of thinking, the other habits that are occasions of the sin, whether or not they are intrinsically bad themselves, and doing away with these.

St. Benedict medals, properly and fully blessed with the exorcism blessing, are very helpful against the activity of the demonic. The more the better to a certain extent.

If one is experiencing a temptation, take a blessed St. Benedict medal, touch it to one’s forehead and pray for relief.
