Feast of Bl. John Paul II

I was wondering if others had the experience of celebrating the Feast of Bl John Paul on Oct 22. The day has been added to the Franciscan Calendar and missal as a feast. It’s a memorial in Rome and Poland, but a feast for Franciscans. We had the first mass with the new collect in Latin and in English and the proper readings. It was very beautiful. I was wondering if people were even going to notice the change. Those who come to our chapel for mass did not even realize that the brother was wearing white, the mass had incense, and the traditional Saturday mass of the BVM was not celebrated. It was inserted very smoothly. We had only one person object to it. I don’t know how many other dioceses and religious communities asked for permission to include it in their calendars and to elevate it from memorial to feast. My guess is that the Carmelites may have also done so. We have a new insert to the Franciscan Breviary too, just for the feast of Bl. John Paul. Now you need three hands to manipulate the Breviary.

I am sorry to say that I don’t know of anywhere in my diocese where this Mass was offered, but I wish I did, I would have loved to be able to attend!
To tell the truth, I am not even sure if we have any Franciscans in our diocese.
I live a couple hours away from St. Bonaventure University, maybe it’s time to check them out!

I live in the Seattle Archdiocese and my pastor celebrated Saturday morning Mass for the feast of Blessed John Paul II on the aniversary of his papacy.

Brother JR-how cool that you had Mass in honor of Blessed John Paul II!

Kind of funny that it’s on the Franciscan calendar…he was actually a member of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites, so it would have been more logical to have it on the Carmelite calendar.

But still cool, nonetheless…

I was very surprised to find that more dioceses outside of Rome and Poland had asked to include it on their liturgical calendar.

I know that Bl. John Paul was a Discalced Carmelite. That’s why I said that I imagine that the Carmelites also have his feast day on their calendar.

Franciscans have a very close relationship with Bl. John Paul. He started declericalization of the Franciscans, the return to the 13th century and adopted the Franciscans’ method of ecumenism.

We also have a strong attachment to the papacy in general. In our rule there is written that we obey popes without questioning. It is the belief that the Holy Spirit is the Superior General and he speaks only through the pope. The General Minsiters are bound to the popes. We celebrate all the popes, including Bl. John XXIII and B. John Paul II. For their dioceses, these are memorials, for us they are feasts.

As to where you can find this online, I have no idea. We did not get it online. We have a card like the one that you have circulating with the new responses to the Roman Missal.
