It is very, very important to realize that no matter who says what about whether a certain day is of obligation, it does NOT change the reality of when a liturgical day exists.

Sunday night, December 31, through Monday, January 1, is what it is. A solemnity. Just because certain locales don’t have an obligation attached to it doesn’t change that reality.

In the USA, there is no obligation this year (the propriety of that decision is another story altogether).

The obligation is for Sunday. Attendance at any Mass from Saturday night, December 30, through Sunday, any time, counts.

If a Mass is celebrated Sunday NIGHT, rubrically it MUST be the Mass of the solemnity.

So, a liturgically conscious Catholic would want to attend the Mass of the Holy Family, from Saturday night through Sunday midafternoon.

But the obligation speaks only of Sunday, not of the various rubrical realities of what Mass is celebrated when.

This is really all very simple; unfortunately the US Bishops tend to complicate reality for reasons known only to themselves and God.

So, to review:

Saturday night, December 30 = Holy Family
Sunday, December 31, through midafternoon = Holy Family
Sunday night, December 31 – January 1 all day = Solemnity

Mass obligation may be fulfilled, as usual, any time from Saturday night through Sunday, any time. End of story.

Yes or NO is attending Mass at 4 PM for mary the mother of GOd on Sunday Afternoon fullfill MY SUNDAY Obligatoin?

Meaning this is the only mass I would attend this weekend

My diocese Mother of God (jan 1) is not a holy day of obligation because it Falls on a Monday it is transferred to Sunday. My parish has 5:30 PM on Saturdays (today) and 9:00 and 11:00 on sundays. My Parish Priest HOWEVER has decided to Have a Mass for Mary the Mother of God at 4PM on Sunday afternoon.

My question is can I fullfill my Sunday Obligation by attending the 4PM Mother of God Mass?

I could make th e5:30 PM mass today but have plans during that time. I would cancel my plans if the 4PM Mass tommorrow does not fulfill my obligation.
Yes.

There is no such thing as “transferring” obligations.

In the USA this year, there is just the usual Sunday obligation. ANY MASS ON SUNDAY, from Saturday night through Sunday any time, counts.

Period. End of story.

Alex I am going to take that as a simple yes?,NO?

Really I am not that scrupulous but you people do not realize how big of a college football fan I am. Besides my faith and Family CFB takes up at least 1/10 of my life. It is a BIG BIG family thing for us folks at my house. LIttle kids and all get dressed up and eat food and enjoy eachother weather at the stadium of at home watching our beloved Hawkeyes beat the tar out of the Longhorns.

There now you can see how pathetic I really AM. I Am gong to find a Mass for Monday too now.

Thanks for your answers.

Your question has been answered, more than once.

As for football…well…if you are going to interject that into this issue…it’s irrelevant. Totally. Absolutely.

…about not being able to make mass on holy days of obligation, it turns out I don’t have the problem after all.

Background: I’ve worked security for the past 3+ years, and specifically I’ve been stuck on the weekend night shifts, which has been the cause of my problems. Looooong weekend nights, and being totally “hung over” on Mondays.

However, my supervisor came to visit last night. Our security client (a factory under construction here in town) all of a sudden wants to go on full-time security. So, 1) the three of us who are currently working that location are going on straight 8-hour WEEKDAY shifts, with more guards being hired to cover the weekends and to be on call. Furthermore, 2) my shift is the DAY shift, just like normal people. Furthermore, 3) I have been named site supervisor, with a promotion straight to CAPTAIN (and a substantial pay raise; well, substantial, for a security guard). As the factory expands and their security needs expand, I am now responsible for managing the whole site. Finally, 4) last night was my LAST 14-hour night shift.

Since last night, I have been (in my wife’s words) gobsmacked.

Bottom line: On Monday, the Feast of Mary the Mother of God, my wife and I will be going to Mass together, and I will be awake and able to “assist” like a normal person.

If you don’t have anything to rejoice about today, rejoice with me.

God doesn’t give us what we want, He gives us what we need!

Thanks be to God, and thanks to Mama Mary for bringing you situation to the foot of her Son! The prayer of a just man availeth much,: but, the prayer of the Mother of God can alter the universe! Thank you, Jesus! Amen…

You poor thing. To the best of my knowledge Monday’s Feast does revert to Sunday. Someone will correct me if I’m wrong on this.
This Sunday is the Feast of the Holy Family. Monday is the Solmnity of Mary and is a Holy Day but NOT in the U.S. a Holy Day of Obligation.
