Feast of St Blaise Blessing of the throats

I had no opportunity to go to Mass today. I would’ve liked my throat blessed. It feels a bit ‘ticklish’ as if something is starting. It would be helpful to all especially at this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere.
 
I used to recall as a youngster that I was convinced that if I didn’t get my throat blessed on the feast of St Blaise, I would get a sore throat sometime that year.
 
Most of the churches around here had it on the Saturday and Sunday this year. I got my blessing yesterday afternoon from a deacon after Sunday Mass. I already have a bad cough for several days but as always it could be a lot worse.
 
Its truly wonderful to see this holy act being performed. As Catholics we are so lucky to have such blessings to deepen our faith.
 
Fr. did it during Mass yesterday since he was leaving for India this morning and there would be no Mass today.

We had it yesterday after mass.

When I was a child and my mom told me what was going to happen, I thought the candles were going to be lit and was afraid my hair might catch on fire. ☺️
 
I remember asking my mom when I was small why the candles weren’t lit and she explained about the hair catching on fire thing.
I’m willing to bet in olden tymes they were lit though.

Back in the day they didn’t give out the blessing on the closest Sunday. If you wanted it, then you went to weekday Mass. Mom had lots of throat issues so we always went.

I went to Mass just now so got to double dip on the blessing as the priest did it today where I went.

We have always had it in my neck of the woods on his feast day, so we had it after Mass today. Father gave food for thought in his sermon when he spoke about also asking St. Blaise to help us use our throats, voice, mouth for good—for spreading the Gospel and blessing others.
 
It was always one of my favorite feast days as a child, and it made me a little sad that most of the churches around here don’t do the individual blessings. The priest at Mass yesterday gave a general blessing. I went to a different church for daily Mass today, and that priest also gave a general blessing. I am thankful for the blessing. Nostalgia just hit me hard, and I miss the individual blessing with the candles.
 
It was one of the memorable feasts of my childhood too. I find it quirky: just one of the wonderfully special things of the Church.
 
There was no Mass at my parish today but a friend and I invited our priest out to dinner and afterward he blessed our throats with my candles that he blessed yesterday during Candlemas😀
 
Welcome to CAf. 🙋 🙏 I have never had a priest just give a general blessing. That is a shame. Of course a blessing is a blessing but the beauty of this tradition is another example of the touch of Christ in our lives. We had a priest 80 years old give us the blessing along with another priest who was the main celebrant at mass. Both of our priests had been doctors before their call to the sacrament of holy orders. (just like St. Blaise) God bless all priests who touch our lives with the sacred priesthood of Jesus Christ. Pray for more vocations to the priesthood … we need holy priests and young men willing to be generous and respond to the call of Christ.
 
Thank you so much! I’ve always been drawn to St. Blaise’s feast day and this special blessing probably due to the fact that I began cantoring at church when I was 11. Anything to protected my throat and voice is always a good thing. 😁 And wow, that’s awesome. God bless them for following that call to priesthood, and you are so very right about the need to pray for more vocations. I will be devoting my daily prayers and Mass today to just that. ). For me, it’s the Feast of Saint Blaise many, many times each year. 🙂
 
Unlike those of you who have nostalgic memories of that feast from your childhood days, I never heard of this feast until I at least in my 30s. I can only assume that in the years that St. Blaise fell on a Sunday (1957, 1963, 1974, 1980) there was no blessing in the parishes where I went to Mass. As a kid the only time I went to daily Mass was during Advent and Lent.
 
I always have had a special place in my heart for St Blaise. One of my favorite pieces of art I’ve done is a version of the St. When I was a kid, I figured we got our throats blessed right before Lent because we’d be eating a lot of fish and didn’t want to choke on a bone.
 
I have a special place in my heart for St. Blaise, too, because I am frequently in Salzburg and one of the most interesting and ancient churches in town is dedicated to St. Blaise.
