Feast of St. Mary Magdalene

It has been suggested that a topic for discussion on the Trad Forum could be the lives of the saints. I thought it might be good to post a little something about St. Mary Magdalene, since today is her feast day.

From the 1962 missal, she is described as thus:

July 22

ST. MARY MAGDALENE, Penitent

St. Mary Magdalene, of Magdala in Galilee, was the sister of St. Martha and St Lazarus. First a sinner, she was converted by our Lord, who raised Lazarus at her prayer. She stood at the Cross “till our Lord sent forth His Spirit”. After His victory, Christ showed Himself to Magdalene and made her His messenger to announce His Resurrection to the Apostles.

It is not widely accepted that she was the sister of Martha and Lazarus since they came from Bethany and Mary came from Magdala (hence her name). Also scripture does not say she was a sinner but was cured of seven demons. She is also often said to be the women who washed Jesus’ feet but that woman is not named.
 
Are there any references to her life as a Christian with the Apostles after Jesus’ ascension?

Her cult in the south of France believe she traveled by boat there and lived her final years as a hermit. Local legend, so I’m not sure how the Church would comment. There may be more, but I’ve never looked into it.

There is a group of people who believe she had Christ’s children, but afaik, they are not Christians.

Ugh yeah. I read that years go during my short time away from Christianity. Wasn’t helpful.

Different portrayals are of different aspects of her legend. Donatello’s refers to the part of her legend that says she lived in a cave for the rest of her life in contemplation. She wore no clothes and was covered by her long hair and was fed the Eucharist daily by angels.

Earlier in her life she was reportedly very beautiful and wealthy according to the Golden Legend.

I love her, she is my patron saint. 👍

2 They gave a dinner for him there, and Martha served, while Lazarus was one of those reclining at table with him.
3 Mary took a liter of costly perfumed oil made from genuine aromatic nard and anointed the feet of Jesus 2 and dried them with her hair; the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.
4 Then Judas the Iscariot, one (of) his disciples, and the one who would betray him, said,
5 “Why was this oil not sold for three hundred days’ wages 3 and given to the poor?”

I think the reference was to the other woman who wiped Jesus’ feet with her hair in Luke:

Luk 7:37 And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment,
Luk 7:38 and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
