The name Michael means ‘He who is like unto God’. The archangel engages in a great cosmic battle with the Devil. In the Book of Jude, he contends with the Devil over the body of Moses, rebuking the Evil One in God’s name. The imagery reveals that with the triumph of Jesus, evil no longer reigns throughout the cosmos, but remains on earth as the enemy of those who seek to follow God’s will.

In the New Testament Michael is twice represented as the helper of God’s chosen people.

Gabriel (his name means man of God) is an archangel who assists Daniel, helping him to understand his visions. Gabriel has a special role in the New Testament. To Zachariah the father of John the Baptist, he announces the birth of the future prophet. He brings the message to the Virgin Mary that she is to be the Mother of God.

Raphael appears in the Book of Tobit as one of the seven archangels who stand in God’s presence. Tobit presents him as hearing our prayers and bring them to God. Raphael means ‘God heals’.

All three archangels appear in later Christian writings many times, with Michael often seen as the receiver of souls of the departed - as in the spiritual Michael Row the Boat Ashore…

We had such a lovely sung Mass for St Michael today. We even had a Priest who travelled hours to be with us, he could sing!

Then the angel that had been sent to me, whose name was Uriel, answered and said to me, “Your understanding has utterly failed regarding this world, and do you think you can comprehend the way of the Most High?” Then I said, “Yes, my Lord.” And he replied to me, “I have been sent to show you three ways, and to put before you three problems. And how can one who is already worn out by the corrupt world understand incorruption?” When I heard this, I fell on my face and said to him, “It would be better for us not to be here than to come here and live in ungodliness, and to suffer and not understand why.”

Today is the Feast of my patron saint and Deacon called for volunteers for Eucharistic Ministers and I answered. Thanks be to God, Deacon accepted me to serve; even though I’m not trained. I committed to being trained as an EME so I can serve again. It was a life changing experience.

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray and
do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host; by the power of God, cast into hell, Satan and all of the evil spirits who roam about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

I attended this Mass today, TLM/EF. Solemn High Mass with three priests. Relics of the chapel of Saint Michael were offered for veneration. Very beautiful Mass, something not to be missed. Well worth the two hour drive each way.
