Has anyone’s parish scheduled masses for the Feast of the Assumption this year? This year my parish has no masses scheduled in any of the churches that make up the parish, the only option is here for me is a 8 am mass at a convent. The Saturday late afternoon/evening masses will be for Sunday and not the feast.

Canon Law- 1246

Whenever January 1, the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, or August 15, the solemnity of the Assumption, or November 1, the solemnity of All Saints, falls on a Saturday or on a Monday, the precept to attend Mass is abrogated.

I guess most parishes choose not to celebrate it since it is not a day of obligation this year.

And that is sad… that we can’t spend an hour or so to honor the Mother of Our Savior with this feast. I guess the other things we do on this Saturday will be MUCH more important.

I’m glad our parish will have two Masses for this wonderful feastday.

You are lucky. I’m sure many of the parishes here will have Masses.

This is not a parish option. I use the Ordo daily in saying the Liturgy of the Hours. For this coming Saturday August 15, the parish priests were instructed to announce that this coming Saturday August 15 would not be considered a holy day of obligation in that it falls on the vigil of the Sunday Liturgy which always takes precedence. The date of the vigil honors our Blessed Mother. The vigil mass itself is for the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time. All Vigils and Sundays honor our Lord Jesus, God, creator. As all of us, Mary was created. None of her feasts, surpass those celebrated in honor of Jesus. I do not say this lightly, as I have a great devotion to her and pray to her, for her mediation and intercession daily.

Actually what the canon says is:
Can. 1246
§1. Sunday, on which by apostolic tradition the paschal mystery is celebrated, must be observed in the universal Church as the primordial holy day of obligation. The following days must also be observed: the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Epiphany, the Ascension, the Body and Blood of Christ, Holy Mary the Mother of God, her Immaculate Conception, her Assumption, Saint Joseph, Saint Peter and Saint Paul the Apostles, and All Saints.
§2. With the prior approval of the Apostolic See, however, the conference of bishops can suppress some of the holy days of obligation or transfer them to a Sunday.
Apparently, item (2) is what has been done this year.

There is clearly no requirement to suppress the feast just because it falls on a Saturday.

Your are correct. It is NOT A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION, but it is still a First Class Feast and can be honored as such.

BTW, the sound of HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION bothers me. Why are we so afraid to attend Mass every day, let alone Feast days like this? Why do we have to be obligated by Canon Law? Sad.

Correct, but Saturday, prior to 5 p.m., is still the First Class Feast of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. And our parish will have a Mass in the morning and around noon in honor of Our Lady, and that makes me happy.

This is our parish’s biggest event of the year out side of Easter and Christmas!!

This is an amazing day at our parish!! This is how we do parish summer festival 🙂

These are photos from last year: te-deum.smugmug.com/gallery/5728147_79TPP#353631955_L5pbG

More info here – schedule of events: assumptiongrotto.com/august_15_scheduled_events.htm

I understand the evening Mass will be in Latin, and will be indoors this year because there will be a full orchestra. The Archbishop will be saying Mass, then the candle light procession out to the grotto afterward.

It is such a wonderful day - if you can make it we would love to have you if you are in the area!

At Mass this morning, they announced that Masses on Saturday would be at 8:30am and 10am.

This is the case in my parish too.

The only times my parish has Saturday Masses prior to the Sunday anticipated Mass (or a vigil Mass) is when there is a funeral/wedding/First Communion or if Saturday is a major solemnity like Christmas for which the obligation is not abrogated.

Every once in a while we’ll have some visiting priest who WANTS to celebrate a Mass on a Saturday when there’s a Holy Day but those days are so uncommon as to be not worth mentioning.

We are having Masses both Friday and Saturday for the Feast, Holy Day or not. I will also be using Marian music the whole weekend at all Masses.

The Archdiocese of Baltimore is the same: the Assumption is not a Holy Day of Obligation if it falls on a Saturday or a Monday, as it does this year. My associate pastor said every day is a Holyday.

Is Fr. DeAscanis saying Mass at Crucifixion on Saturday? What time?

Is he the one who usually hears confessions on Saturdays? Again, what time?

👍

I’m curious to know your source for that quote. I’ve checked two sources for the canons, just to be certain, and that quote isn’t in either one of them.

Yes, it’s true that in the US, if those feasts fall on a Saturday, the oblibation to attend Mass that day is abrogated. The text is accurate, but the source is not canon 1246.

Only the obligation to attend Mass changes.

August 15 is still the Solemnity of the Assumption. No local parish, or even diocese can change this. Saturday is the Assumption (this year). But we also need to keep in mind that once it becomes Saturday evening according to the secular calendar, the feast of Sunday has begun, and it will no longer be Saturday August 15, but Sunday August 16–the 20th of Ordinal time.

Yes, but a Mass on Saturday morning/afternoon (or for that matter, Friday evening) would still be the Mass of the Solemnity of the Assumption.

The OP here, Justin, was looking for information on attending a Mass for the Assumption (his example was 8 AM Saturday), and specifically not a Saturday evening Mass for Sunday.

Hello, the feast of the Assumption lands on a Saturday. Does that mean we have to attend the Saturday Mass or could we attend on Sunday? In other words is the Saturday a Holy day of obligation or has it been moved to the Sunday.

I live in Canada so it differs from the USA. Anyone know? Thanks God Bless ! 🙂

This year, by canon law, this feast is not a Holy Day of Obligation. The Sunday Mass (and Saturday vigil) will be ordinary time, not the feast. On another thread, someone quoted the canon, so it should be universal.

It’s not a Holy Day of Obligation, but it’s still a Holy Day, it’s still the Solemnity of the Assumption. Any Mass on Saturday can be celebrated for this Solemnity, and a vigil can be celebrated on Friday evening.
