This image illustrates the connection between the Holy Family and the Holy Trinity. Horizontally, in the earthly direction, we see Mary, Jesus, and Joseph. Vertically, in the heavenly direction, we see the Father and the Son, and between them the Holy Spirit in the shape of a dove. Jesus, fully human and fully divine, joins heaven and earth.

In photos of our own families, the picture is not complete without God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Let us welcome God into our families and appreciate his presence with us, in us, and all around us.

I don’t have a picture to share, but I see in my imagination the wonder and awe in Mary and Joseph’s faces as they present Jesus in the temple and hear Simeon and Anna proclaim the words of prophecy God had given them concerning Him. Simeon said of Him, “… and the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed.”

Lord reveal to me my inner most thoughts and cleanse my heart!

I have two reasons this feast is special to me. One is an icon of the Holy Family a dear friend sent me. It’s been on three continents. She bought it on vacation visiting family in Slovakia, took it home to Australia, and mailed it to me in North America. I’ve had it since college and it’s gone with me everywhere. It’s one of my favorite images.

The other is that another dear friend of mine lives near a shrine to the Holy Family. She said a lot of prayers for my vocation there, and I owe my priesthood in large part to those prayers. When designing my coat of arms, without realizing it, I chose charges that formed a visual representation of the Holy Family, with a symbol for each Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. So it was a providential salute to my friend and her prayers at that shrine.

This is my favourite icon of the Holy Family. We have one in my parish and I saw one, but larger, when I was in Beit Sahour (shepherd´s field). As a student, I couldn’t pay the “three months food” to buy one for myself so I have to look at the one we have in my parish church.
