I know that since Pius XI there have been attempts to restore Sunday Mass to its prominent place on the weekly calendar. For a long time if many of the feasts fell on a Sunday, the Sunday Mass would give way for the Mass of the Feast, and the Sunday of that week would be commemorated only. My question is what is the rule for Feasts that fall on Sunday in the 1962 missal?
My question is coming from the fact that St. Matthew’s feast day fell on Sunday this year. I’ve been looking at the liturgical calendar on a Sedevacanist’s site (not that I endorse it), and it showed that St. Matthew’s feast day took precedance making Sunday a commemoration. I believe that this group though is following the missal of 1956. When I looked at the bulletin of the local extraordinary form parish, they made no mention of St. Matthew’s feast. So what’s the rule for Feasts that fall on Sunday? Sunday gave way to the Feast of the Holy Cross in both the ordinary and extraordinary forms.
