Matthew 7: 7 - 12
7 "Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or what man of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! 12 So whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them; for this is the law and the prophets.

There is a prayer built on this Gospel reading, A novena. The Novena to the most sacred heart of Jesus. Compassion.
It was Padre Pios favorite prayer…

"Novena Prayer
Divine Jesus, You have said, “Ask and you shall receive; seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you.” Behold me kneeling at Your feet, filled with a lively faith and confidence in the promises dictated by Your Sacred Heart to Saint Margaret Mary. I come to ask this favor: Mention your request). "
God the father is a merciful, kind giving father but he is not a ATM machine, social worker or slot machine. He will provide us with all the pysical, social, and spiritual nurishment we need. If we ask him for a loaf of bread he will not give us a stone but also he will not give us things we do not need if we love him. We may not need a job, or barrels of money, if our spiritual job here is to find how to know love and serve him. Perhaps what we need is grace, prayer and faith, to recognize all the joy and blessing of the simple things God has created for us, such as birds, trees, family and eachother.
