Feel like I let them down

My situation is kind of complex but please bear with me. I had an internship (virtual) that seemed pretty legit and my boss never gave me a reason to doubt anything. My situation is unique because of physical limitations, things beyond my control, so it was a win-win. Then the company was “sold” and I eventually found out my new “boss” was a fraud. I’ll spare the details but the evidence I found was concrete. I was scammed. Thankfully all I lost was time and confidence.

It’s been almost a month and I still feel like I let my family and friends down. I have a college degree but due to my medical condition and where I currently live, finding any position is very challenging. I have told very few people outside of my family what really happened as it is so embarrassing and I have a hard time even thinking about what happened as it is still difficult to wrap my mind around.

I keep thinking I should tell people sooner than latter as they will be asking but I am having a difficult time bringing myself to do it. My sister told me it is sort of like a trauma or a shock to the system and I just need more time. It’s ironic I can tell myself I did everything in good faith, but still feel responsible…

I don’t see you asking a question here, so perhaps you are just needing to talk about what happened?
I don’t see how you could be letting anyone down. We all get the wool pulled over our eyes at one point or another in our lives. It is upsetting, but it is not shameful. My advice is be open and honest with your close family and friends. They need to know what you are going through so they can be helpful to you.
The fact that you have physical disabilities limiting your options isn’t even something that you should feel is a part of this. By that I mean that even people with perfect health and able bodies can easily get scammed. Con artists are professionals. Sometimes even legitimate organizations can over-promise and under-deliver and people end up getting scammed.
So please don’t take this too personally. It happened and it was horrible, but YOU did NOT let anyone down. God bless.

Maybe you’re too proud. Our time, place, and circumstances on earth are uniquely suited for us to weave holiness in our life, and when circumstances arise where we feel humiliated are really opportunities to chip away at our pride. Pride is at the root of vanity and it makes us fearful of what others may think about us. Thus it is that humility purifies the soul, just as fire purifies gold. Humility is the truth about ourselves. It’s not your fault that you were scammed. The best course is to always be on the side of Truth and to move on.

I don’t think you let anyone down. In a year, you’ll probably laugh at the situation. Good luck finding a good job for you!

skigirl1689 you did not let anyone down. Things like this happen to a lot of people more often than you would care to think. Don’t get down on yourself either. What you lack do to your ‘physical limitations’ you make up for with the fortitude and humility that you exhibit by coming on here and telling us what happened to you.

Chalk it up to one of life’s learning experiences - and trust me, there will be a lot more learning experiences in your life - mine too. I just learned a new one not too many weeks ago myself. You and all will be OK! Trust that God has your back and His Will be done.

I have a dear friend that I once told to ask God to grant her the WISDOM, STRENGTH and COURAGE to know His Will, do His Will and accept His Will when she was unsure of something, or when something was upsetting to her. My advice to you is pray the same.

Much Peace!

Mike 🙂

I really don’t think pride is the issue, I mean, I hate when people make a big deal of my accomplishments in the first place. I don’t even share how well I did in school with people because it might look like I am too prideful. I also have no issues sharing much more serious struggles with others that are definitely more personal and humiliating in a sense.

I just can’t bring myself to talk about it…it’s weird but I think I’m worried if I discuss it I’ll become angry with whoever it was I was dealing with and I don’t want to be angry. If that makes sense.

Thanks! I was able to share with my pastor and he said a lot of the same thing…and one person said I should take into account I was wise enough to figure it out before something more serious happened. I guess I can take comfort in that. But to be honest, I felt so foolish for a while, even though I had done all of my “homework” with my first boss so I guess I just trusted the new boss was legit as well. The worst part is now I am having a hard time trusting when looking for a new position…but I don’t think anyone would say that’s not uncommon given what took place.
