I been thinking and reading the bible and other works here lately.well my grasp on the trinity is starting to get to me.at one point i could explain the trinity to someone who ask and know i am doing a good job explaining it,and knowing i am helping that person.
Code:
But here lately i feel like i don't know if i understand any more or believe it.i need help.there are verses that are making me doubt.like when Jesus says "why call me good,no one is good but God'........i go to my father, who is your father, and my God,who is your God........when he prays too God,but yet he is God..........and when he says he will be sitting at the right hand of God,if he is God is he sitting next to himself?

These are some of the things that are going back in forth in my head.I don't want to upset anyone but i don't want to be a believer and have doubts.can someone help me please.

 Thank you.

Luke 18:18 And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” 21 And he said, “All these I have observed from my youth.”

Taken out of context, this would seem Jesus is saying he’s not God. Let’s put it back into context. The rich man called him Good, Jesus said “why do you call me Good, only God is Good,” Jesus recited the commandments and the rich man replied “I observe them”. This is not a proclomation that he is not God, this is a direct proclomation that HE IS GOD. The rich man observed he was Good and Jesus did not correct him nor refute him but asked him why…

As to the other things, I’m sure others will answer those scriptual texts but you need to keep in mind Jesus is God the Son, one Person in the Trinity. We can recite scripture all day long proving Christ is God from Thomas proclaiming “My Lord and my God” to Jesus, when the blind man worshipped Christ at his feet when he was healed, John proclaiming the Word was God and the Word became flesh and dewelt amoung us as Jesus, etc… there are no contradictions in Sacred Scripture, so don’t look at texts like the ones you are reciting as “silver bullets” or problems/contradictions against other verses, take a active stance that there is no contrdictions and you’ll see it in a different view.

Finding Faith, maybe I can help a little – or at least get the discussion started.

God is a mystery and our understanding of Him is very limited. Considering only the trinity, He is three divine Persons yet they are the same God. We have only glimpses of Him through parables and analogies… important for human minds, but pale in accurately describing His glorious nature.

Jesus, God the Son, likewise is a mystery as He is both fully human (like us, but sinless) and fully divine (nothing like us). We can not fit Him into our framework of normal human experience.

No person could be the Creator of everything. Comparably we are extremely limited and equally limited in our understanding of He who is the Creator.

To understand God you would have to be God. Accept that you are not and praise God who is!

Jesus asked him why he called him good and Jesus corrected him and told him he isn’t good but god.why didn’t jesus just tell him the commandments and what else he needed to do to get into heaven.why correct him first

Not trying to be mean or anything but i have heard this before and to me it is just away to get around the question.I am asking why did jesus on so many times say things like “my god,who is your god,and my father, who is your father” and things like he will sit at the right hand of god,if he is god then is he sitting at his own right hand.or why did he pray to himself if he is god.

So this is a debate now? Okay… Where you get that inclination in those verses? Show us where he corrected him. Then show us where he said he is not Good. Keep in mind the context of the rest of Sacred Scripture stating he is Good and is God.

Is your reason of this thread for resistance or receptivity?

My reason for this thread is too help me hold on to my faith.every time i post or make a thread i am always replied with hostile people who would rather get mad at some asking questions about faith.and when you simply want a deep detail response you don't get one,and then when you question the persons answer they turn from a a good loving catholic to someone who rather you have blind faith and not dare ask question anything

The more i post and read on this website the more i question if i really want to become catholic, people on here so quick to pull a 180.I don't think i have found the church that i hear so much about or the right religion for me.this thread has made it clear that becoming catholic isn't in my heart,it has shown me that blind faith is better then a knowledgeable faith.I am ending my journey into the catholic church and looking elsewhere for my faith, religion, and God.
Thank you Trevor Stamm, for showing me what was being told to me about some in the catholic church.

It’s sad that you have to decide based on a couple of posts on an internet forum. I would humbly invite you to go deeper and seek the truth.

Its a lot of other things then this forum, but i am not going to take a journey blind that will change my life.plus a lot of other things the church teaches that i don’t full agree with.the questions i have could be caused by my studying of Islam and reading of the Quran. But i will have to find out this on my own.
God bless all who have tired to help me on here in the past.

Good luck in your journey. May you find what you are looking for. God bless your path.

Your key word here is “doubt.” I also have had a spiritual battle this weekend which concerned the Holy Trinity after I watched a movie called Black Death. There was outright blasphemy in this movie, so don’t watch it. That said, to combat and overcome your doubts, pray to the Holy Spirit that He enters your heart and kindles in you the fire of his love and that He give you wisdom and understanding. The St. Michael prayer and the Holy Rosary would help also.

In more practical terms, realize that our Lord saw his relationship with the Holy Trinity in terms of a chain of command: God the Father at the top, God the Son in the Middle, and God the Holy Spirit at the bottom. Think of it like this: God the Father is a platoon leader who sends a squad, led by God the Son, to scout and combat an enemy camp. God the Holy Spirit is the squads radioman who sends messages back to God the Father and receives the squad’s orders from Him. Through the Holy Spirit, God the Son gets the order to proceed and He instructs his men (disciples) on their positions and order of attack.
The fight ensues and God wins!!!

I hope and pray this works for you:)

Honestly i have come to the conclusion in regards to this issue, that i will never get my puny mind around the mystery of the Holy Trinity. But i beleive that God exists in such a state, for lack of better word.

As for other texts claiming to be sacred. that too is acepted by faith. not to mention the history of texts.

Let me apologize if you take my response as harsh. When one is supplied with a sufficient answer to a question and does not accept the answer, it does not invalidate the answer. Charity in Truth and in truth comes defense of it when criticized, defending truth is charitable. I was being charitable to truth and as charitable to you as one can without omission of truth.

This is why certain cases should not be exchanged through a computer, if we were face to face you would’ve felt a different tone from me in my exchange. What you perceived as uncharitable on my part was falsely presumed as an aggressive response.

If you are so defensible of your interpretation of the particular verses that are in question, I would’ve expected a response to my explanation. Yet you criticize my stance of “blind faith” even though there was an intellectual explanation of it. Let us expound on reasons rather then feelings when it comes to truth in our future exchanges.

In the end, if your were convinced before that this is the true, holy, one, and apostolic Church established by Christ, a simple blink of emotion wouldn’t have damaged your reasons and faith. This is not a Church built on feelings but of law, justice, reason, faith, charity, hope, love, and commandment of God. I ask you to dig deeper into this truth.

As a form of apology, I shall offer a week’s worth of Rosaries dedicated to you.

Hang on tight; it is only a passing phase and you bounce back stronger.

The most helpful thing I have read in Scripture is that Jesus is the Word of God–the Word that proceeds forth from God by the power of God Who is the Holy Spirit.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:1-5 (notice how the bold shows a distinction between the Word and God, yet the Word IS God. Distinct, yet one. Remember the very beginning of Genesis where “God spoke”? That is the Word, that is Jesus pre-Incarnate. All things were made in Him and through Him because He is the Word of God that God “spoke” or poured forth.)

Anyway, Jesus is still God, but He has come forth from the heart of God (where He dwelt from all eternity). In coming forth, He took flesh and became man and entered space and time-- He was/is still fully God, but took on human nature in order to save mankind. The Word (whom we call Son) took on a human body and soul. In the Scriptures you cited, He seems somewhat deferential to the Father, seemingly “less than” if you read Scriptures out of their context with the whole Scripture. There are a couple reasons Jesus may seem less than the Father, I think. One is, Jesus is trying to be the example, especially in terms of humility. His job is to lead mankind to the Kingdom of Heaven where God dwells in His fullness. He wants us to recognize God for Who He is-- a loving God who cares about each and every one of us personally, not a distant God Who rules just for the sake of ruling. So, He refers to God as His Father and ours, recognizing God’s paternal love for all mankind (and, remember Jesus is fully man). Jesus attitude toward His Father reveals He is talking as a man. This is really important because it shows us just how much God loves us and how far God went to save His people. The Word “emptied Himself” (Ph 2:7) for a little while and was “lower than the angels” (Heb 2:9) that He might save mankind. He did not regard His equality with God as something to be grasped (Ph 2:6). It is clear from the Philippians passage that the Word was in the form of God, but in some incomprehensible way, lowered Himself from His majesty and became man and God fully united. Truly, I think one could spend their entire life contemplating the Incarnation and never fully understand it. I think the last reason that it may seem that Jesus is “less than” is because He is so completely obedient to the Father. You might begin to think the Father is an authority over the Son in their Divinity. But I do not see it as an authority issue as much as complete agreement of Will and complete love. In their Divinity, the Father and the Son love each other perfectly and are unified in their Will for all mankind. The Son so loves the Father that He wants to do whatever the Father wants— not because of authority, but because of love.

Regarding the scripture “why do you call me good”, I believe you are misinterpreting that. Jesus knows that the man does not recognize who He is— He is giving him a hint. If Jesus were trying to proclaim He was not God, He might have said “I am not good, only God is good.” However, He did not say that. I believe He wanted the man to think about why He was calling Jesus good and wanted to reveal His Divinity with subtlety.

I hope this didn’t confuse you more, I really am trying to help.

Go to confession frequently, reading the bible alone will not suffice, you need the sacraments.

Go weekly or every fortnight.

Have regular confessor.

Pray without ceasing, Say the Divine Mercy Chaplet, it only takes 5 minutes

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Have a divine mercy image venerated in your room

Pray in front of it, say Jesus have mercy on me a sinner!

Pray the rosary along with the divine mercy chaplet (on a regular rosary), three times a day, morning, noon, night.

It will suffice for your salvation.

And go to daily communion (but prepare that beforehand by going to frequent confession, we need to be holy before receiving God most holy, he will give you strength)

Have spiritual readings, read saints books in addition to the bible. You can get free saints books and recommended reading that will help your faith for free here

Learn the faith from the saints

The one book I would recommend to you would be the Diary of St. Faustina Kowalska - Divine Mercy in my Soul
(it is available online and for free)

Reading her diary has greatly helped me.

You can read it using adobe acrobat reader

May the merciful Jesus bless you

Doubt is normal. Our minds have seasons; and God likes us to have times to exercise our faith muscles.

That said, you may want to read more devotional texts as well as theological. Then again, you may be in the mood to read St. Thomas Aquinas. I don’t know. But it’s very likely that the forum is not going to be as adequate to your needs as one of the Catholic Answers apologists would be.

If you can believe in the Church as body parts of Christ, you obviously have no problem in having Christ sitting next to Christ. (And remember, in Revelation 3, Jesus specifically says that He will have those who overcome sitting on His throne the exact same way that the Father has Christ sitting on His throne. This is about us entering into the divine life of the Trinity, much as the Persons of the Trinity enter into each other.

St. Athanasius’ writings are pretty nice, but there are lots of folks who write good stuff about the Trinity. Nobody gets it all; but you can make an approach.

The other thing is… don’t forget that getting to know the Trinity personally (so to speak!) is your best reference source. Pray and listen to God. Make yourself receptive to Him. If you are having prayer dryness problems, this is also normal. Pray and listen anyway, because you will ultimately get more out of it. (Exercise for your faith muscles again.) The Ascent of Mount Carmel by St. John of the Cross is very good reading, both for understanding God better and for understanding your prayer life.

Also, go to church, either for Mass or just to spend time with God. Be calm and act rationally, even if you feel sad or can’t figure out what you think or what you do. Time will make things clearer. Help other people physically if you can’t help them spiritually.

Other people have been where you are. Don’t be afraid and don’t worry. It will be all right.

Sitting at the right hand of God means that He has the same authority as God, i.e., He is God Incarnate. Since God is spirit and has no right or left hand to sit at, this can only be a euphemism to express the authority of Jesus as one and the same as the Father.

Note that Our Lord did not say that He wasn’t good; He asked the question “why do you call me good?” as a means to bring the person to true faith of Him.

re Matthew 19:17:
Ver. 17. Why askest thou me concerning good?[4] In the ordinary Greek copies, why dost thou call me good? (Witham) — One is good, &c. God alone, by his own nature, is essentially, absolutely, and unchangeably good; at the same time, he is the source of all created goodness, as all goodness is a mere emanation from his. The person here addressing our Saviour, appears not to have believed that Christ was God: wherefore our Saviour, to rectify his misconception, tells him that God alone is good, insinuating thereby, that he should believe him to be God, or cease to address him by the title of good. (Tirinus) — The sense is, that only God is good necessarily, and by his own nature. The Arians bring this place to shew, that Christ is not truly and properly God: but by this way of speaking, Christ does not deny that he is good, even by his nature, and consequently God; but seems to speak in this manner, to make the man know who he was. (Witham)
