Hi everyone,

Over the past few months I’ve gone through many spiritual difficulties but this seems to be the worst one yet. A while ago, I had this really powerful (forceful, vivid) spiritual experience which was as if God was telling me to leave the Catholic Church… and although whatever it was “communicated” to me that it was God, - it didn’t feel like God at all, - and the experience was extremely forceful and uncomfortable. It didn’t give me any peace, though at one point I said “yes” to it, - I still didn’t feel peace, but a great anxiety. Afterwards the anxiety went away, and I felt Catholic again. But whatever it was, it spoke to my mind only, not my heart, and it was so forceful that I found it difficult to think or be aware of anything else. There was a great sense of clarity but in an oppressive way, not like the light and understanding that sometimes we get from God. Since then, I’ve been wondering, what if this was God?? Could He speak in this way, or does He only speak to us in a gentle peaceful way? I felt so confused… and then a couple days ago, I decided it’s from the enemy… and suddenly, I felt SUCH guilt and fear because I felt that I had committed the unforgiveable sin like the Pharisees in Matthew 12 (because they said that something from the Holy Spirit was evil). I tried telling myself, - unlike the Pharisees I didn’t mean to imply that the Holy Spirit is evil, actually the opposite, I didn’t want to attribute something that felt so horrible, to the Spirit.

For the next half an hour after that, it was complete torment because I felt like I was already in hell, - I felt lost for all eternity and the “voice” came back and started telling me that with SUCH force… I almost felt like my mind was being taken over. By the way, that “voice” tells me that I should be Eastern Orthodox, which is what I was before I converted. I feel like it’s using my fears and doubts, - but what if it’s from God? I can’t tell! Well - when I was very close to complete despair, - I suddenly got the grace to turn back to my faith, and suddenly felt this incredible inner peace and confidence…and all the pain went away. It’s almost like God healed my heart. This lasted for a long time, though sometimes that temptation returned, - I found a solution by just turning back to that inner voice in my heart that told me to be Catholic and gave me peace. I decided maybe it’s God, who dwells in my heart and gives me faith.

But then after a while, I started getting tempted with other thoughts, like towards vainglory (so silly I know) and gave in to that, - and then I thought, what if I’m just imagining that ‘inner’ voice? And I started to doubt again… I found all kinds of “mental” prayer extremely difficult, even the Rosary. I prayed the Rosary anyways, but felt great unrest and anxiety afterwards, because whenever I turned to mental prayer all those fears came back. Only looking towards God in my heart gave me peace (but I don’t know if I was just imagining Him, or if it was really Him.) I then started praying really hard for the truth… which ended with me feeling sure that I’ve committed the unforgiveable sin and rejected something from God. I spent the whole night feeling like I’ve lost Jesus, - and not just feeling that in my senses, (as in: desolation), but in my soul. I felt like He’s rejecting me… and that I would never be able to come back, that I would never even be given the light to see my sin and to repent. (so now, whenever I feel peace about being Catholic, I wonder if I’m being deceived!)

Tomorrow morning I will be speaking to a priest and hopefully I’ll tell him this whole story and see what he says… but Im asking here if you could please pray that God would help me understand the truth, that He would help me repent of all my sins (distrust might be one in this situation) and that He would give me light on this issue. Please pray that God would be merciful to me even if I have rejected His voice, that He would help me see that and confess the sin. Also if you have any thoughts I’d appreciate that too!

I will continue praying the Rosary and I’m not giving up, but I really need God’s help… I feel peace in my heart when I think of being Catholic, and also my decision is supported by doctrine, the Scriptures, history, etc, - but isn’t there also a form of false peace that the devil gives? I can’t decide if the devil is accusing me of unforgiveable sin and tempting me to despair and distrust in God, or if he’s giving me a false peace to keep me from following God. However, I believe it is him who is accusing me because God draws us to repentance, and doesn’t accuse.

Thank you!!

I’m going to try trusting in God and praying the Rosary… but I’m still filled with a lot of fear 😦

Because of my life situation, I struggle some of what you feel.
I can hardly pray the Rosary because of mental anguish.
I still feel very Catholic but the Evil One is seizing on me because I am so weak.
I will PRAY for YOU!!!

I’m sorry you’re going through this too!! I think the devil definitely uses our weaknesses.

I just listened to a talk about spiritual discernment and it said that the devil finds it easier to attack those who don’t seek guidance, like from priests, confessors, spiritual directors, etc… he also uses our weaknesses. I feel that my weakness is doubt and the devil is using that and giving me all these fears, and I will go and tell everything to my priest at Confession tomorrow and see what he says. This way makes a lot of sense and I think it might be the truth… the devil fears to be found out, he likes to keep hidden. When we talk about our struggles with a priest, he is no longer hidden.

It says in the Bible, the person who doubts gets confused into following all sorts of things and going in different directions… I think that trust in God is also very important here. I’ll try to do this…

I think the Holy Spirit is able to change people’s hearts, He’s also very patient, and He simply doesn’t NEED to convince someone of the truth by using intense spiritual experiences like what I described…He doesn’t try to force us into following God, but He invites. That’s how I’ve understood it. When I was becoming Catholic, it was a gradual journey for me and I could see God changing my mind on many issues. But He did this in a really patient, natural sort of way, - not by trying to force me to agree.

Trust your instincts! If God was speaking to you, it should certainly not feel oppressive and fill you with such anxiety. It is good that you are going to your priest with all this. He should be able to help you sort through it all.

Praying. :gopray:

I just listened to a talk by a priest, and he said that feelings of great despair, hopelessness, sorrow, etc, - the type where you feel like there is only darkness and confusion - are *never *from God but from the devil. Joy and peace are from God. He described an experience he had, which sounded a lot like mine when I felt that despair about the unforgiveable sin. (and even that other experience, was devoid of any joy, it was very vivid but my mind was in confusion). God helped me a lot afterwards and brought me consolation, but later on I started to worry if I had been deceived by this… but I think that all good things come from God… in any case, - I’ll talk to my priest because I don’t want to trust my own judgement in discerning God’s will and spiritual experiences. All I have to do is trust God and seek guidance from my confessor 🙂 and I think when we do this, God protects us and grants us His peace and real joy.

I think that just like me, that you are going through a spiritual trial which God has allowed although it is quite painful, but in the long run it will make you stronger. He has a plan for you. Try to look back at your life at the times when you knew for sure that you felt the presence of God. In my own experience, when I felt almost completely lost, I prayed the Rosary and you know what …? It led me straight to Jesus. St Faustina, wrote in her diary that Mercy is God’s greatest attribute and He asks us to trust in Jesus .

I am praying for you …

Thank you everyone 🙂

I’m having a lot of trouble right now cause I can’t seem to get back to God… even when I try to trust Him, I feel this anxiety, almost like there’s something I need to repent of or something I’m not seeing, but He’s not showing me what it is. I feel like something is blocking me from God and I don’t know what it is, and that causes me fear, because I’m not sure if I’m a type of spiritual blindness… what if there’s something really wrong and I’m not even seeing it? Please pray that God would help me with this and lead me to repentance for my Confession tomorrow. I will try to pray the Rosary for this intention…

I’ll pray for you but I must ask…what exactly do you think the unforgivable sin is? The answer to this may or may not help out…

Also, pray to St. Michael. He kicked Satan’s butt before and he’ll gladly do it again!

I pray that God will draw you closer and closer to him. May God’s will be done in your life.

For your intentions…

Does our life become from day to day more painful,
more oppressive, more replete with sufferings?
Blessed be He a thousand times who desires it so.
If life be harder, love makes it also stronger,
and only this love, grounded on suffering,
can carry the Cross of my Lord, Jesus Christ.

I believe, O Lord, but strengthen my faith,

Heart of Jesus, I love Thee, but increase my love.

Heart of Jesus, I trust in Thee,
but give greater vigor to my confidence.

Heart of Jesus, I give my heart to Thee,
but so enclose it in Thee that it may never be separated from Thee.

Heart of Jesus, I am all Thine,
but take care of my promise so that I may be able
to put it in practice even unto the complete sacrifice of my life.
Amen

I am very sorry for your situation.

However, I wanna thank you for your post because I am going through a very similar situation. For the past 2 years, I have been feeling so strayed away from God. The replies are also very helpful.

Sometimes we really need to push ourselves harder not to give in the devil temptation.

I will pray for you.
