Lately Ive been feeling discouraged.

I gave up on the faith when I went to college about 8 years ago, and ever since then life has been sort of a tepid, mediocre affair.

I have really gotten into the faith in the past year, and my moral life and life in general seem to have improved tremendously.

Yet to this day I still feel guilty, and recognize more clearly how much I failed to do the right thing at times, and the terrible impact that had on my family and peopl close to me.

I feel discouraged at times, feeling that Ive been so bad for so long, what is the use of continuing this path that I am on?

Any thoughts? Has that ever happened to anyone?

Hi. These are, believe it or not, the times that makes us. It is a way that God brings good from bad, light from darkness. In recognizing one’s own futility, one grows in grace, to learn how total reliance on God is essential.

You would have found your way back, because:
  • you knew in your heart or had some sense that without God everything lacks meaning?
  • because God led you back. He goes after even one lost sheep.

Maybe you feel a bit guilty for having moved away from the faith? If you have Confessed, then you are free. God does give opportunities for reconciliation with other people yet sometimes we just have to move on because today is where we are. People can see changes in others and so the influence of God in one’s life will shine through each person whether said-person can notice this, or not. Dry times are times of trust AND prayer. If one prays about what we are worried about the God helps us through it. He guides us anyway but prayer also helps us to notice that difference.

Now you have a conscience. And this enlightened conscience will participate in God’s plan that is your own personal redemption. We are all sinners and the devil tries his hardest to play on guilt in order to make us lose confidence. Today is where you are. The past belongs to God. If you have offered up your concerns and confessed your sins, then the rest is the devil, and too, that you are not forgiving past transgressions. God takes you where you are today, in the joys, sorrows, and the mundane.

Yes this too has happened to me.

This is very good advice and I appreciate it. 🙂

The very fact that you feel guilt and acknowledge that you have failed to do the right things at times should give you comfort.

It means that you have a conscious and you care about doing the right thing.

Trust me when I say we have all been in similar situations and have all faced guilt, embarrassment, and fail to do the right thing at times. All of us have felt/done this and we will never be perfect.

This is why Christ died for you and for I.

You should continue on the path you are on; you should do it for God, you should do it for yourself as you clearly are recognizing right from wrong, and you should do it to find fulfillment in your life.

God bless you 🙂

Sounds, to me, like the sadness of Sloth
Sloth, as understood in theology, is a sadness or dejection of the will about the divine good one possesses, and arises from a lack of esteem for that good, and for one’s last end and the means to attain it. It occasions an aversion or repugnance in the will to the output of energy - whether physical or intellectual - in the service of God, and a tendency to negligence, arising from a lack of desire for, and joy in the divine good.

I think I can relate to your sentiment to a degree. Faith is a muscle, I have been told. I think as you get older you become more skeptical or should I say, realistic. It is much more difficult to keep your faith as an adult. To me, God feels distant.

There is no reason not to talk over your feelings with a priest in the confessional or in a private appointment where you might get some spiritual direction. There is every reason, in fact, to do so. You will be surprised at how good it can be.
