Feeling dishonest

So I had a rough afternoon yesterday at work. My main work is done at one office, but for a few hours a week, I go to another office to help out there.

So I go there to do one task specifically. As often happens, as the staff is coming and going, I get extra stuff dumped on my desk. I had one such task that I didn’t end up getting to. In fact, I didn’t really try all that hard, but even if I had, I would not have gotten everything done, let alone this extra task. So as I’m heading out at the end of the day (past clock-out time as it is), and without getting even most of my work completed, I put this task back on my ‘boss’s’ desk w/ a note that I did’t get to it. I truly thought she’d be back in the office in time to take care of this (truly, this task is her job to do). None of us knew where she went or when she’d be back.

In her passive fashion, instead of calling me on the phone or to her office, she emails me and said she felt I left the task for her to prove a point. Yeah, a little of that had to do w/ it. Honestly, she ‘dumped’ this work in my lap b/c she was having a heck of a day too and just didn’t want to do it. She went on in her email about how busy the rest of the staff is and how my leaving this task for them to try and get to in the morning was going to put them in a bind. Well, she didn’t mention to me the urgency of the situation when she dumped this in my lap and the ducked out. I feel like she’s really the one who passed the buck and then trying to pin the responsibility on ME!

My beef is that when I’m over there, I’m not there to do their dirty work. I have a specific job to do and I’m unable to do it when I get all this extra stuff dumped on me. I realize that in real Christian charity, I should have sucked it up and bore my cross quietly and graciously and helped out my fellow coworkers.

I emailed her an apology. Next week I will be there to cover the secretary for a couple of days, so I will try to muster up the nerve to sit down with her face to face.

Guess I just needed to rant, but I’m open to comments.

From a managerial standpoint, you are in the wrong when you say it is not your job. Where is your job description posted? I doubt it even exists. Your manager is your BOSS. If she tells you to do something you have to do it. I’m not sure what kind of work you are in, but this is general edicate. It’s her job to manage. You’re the person she manages.

That being said, if you do not have time for something do not accept it. Accepting a job then putting it back on her desk without notifiying her is going to **** her off. Again, I don’t know what kind of work you do, but it sounds like you’re not there full time which in itself can be hectic.

Do they pay overtime?

If so, I would just stay over until all the work was done and make sure I got paid for it. If the boss didn’t like that then she would stop dumping extra stuff on you.

Are you always caught up at your usual office? Is so, then maybe you should spend a little more time at the other one to help out more.

We have 2 campuses with our hospital. Each campus is setup identically but we can’t seem to ever get along. Its like we’re rivals instead of the same company. When someone from my side has to go cross-campus to help with a project they get a real chip on their shoulder and vice-versa.

I don’t really have any advice but I do suggest follow through with sittin down with the lady and explaining how busy you were too.

Actually, I didn’t accept the work she put in front of me, in fact, she didn’t even give it to me directly, another coworker was wondering around and asked her ‘what do you want me to do w/ this, are you going to do it?’ (asking our boss); I guess she just told my coworker to give it to me. I should have just taken it to her then and directly told her I didn’t have time.

Yes, in fact I do have a job description. I have a copy of my annual review which outlines my job duties which does not include this task. I have a feeling that this ‘task’ is going to end up in my lap b/c nobody at the other office wants to take the time or the responsibility for this. I will flip burgers or run the cash register at wal-mart before I take on any more of the other staff’s dirty work!

No, our approval for OT ran out at the end of August. Quite frankly, w/ 2 little ones, I have no desire to work OT. No, it seems w/ all the work I’ve missed with our family illnesses all summer long and my having to cover for the secretary at the other office every other week, I can’t get everything done. Guess I can just work over and take a nice long lunch the next day!

Kind of stinks. For most of my employment, I’ve had a (somewhat intimidating at times) pitbull of a supervisor who will fight tooth and nail to get us what we need for our job and make people accountable. Now I have this passive-aggressive person for a boss. She actually used to be part of the regular staff and we’d been for years w/out a director that I think they just got desperate and gave her an offer ($$) she couldn’t refuse. Sort of feel sorry for her sometimes b/c she is really horrible at this and is just not cut out for the job. She isn’t aggressive enough or direct enough where she needs to be. Besides that, it’s hard for the staff to have any real respect for someone who used to be ‘one of us.’

Sorry, just feeling super gripey and uncooperative!

I know, it sucks, but it’s what makes the business world go around. I don’t like your attitude about leaving your current position of something like this. At my office our employees have to pick annual goals and complete them. The completion of these goals has a lot to do with what kind of raise they recieve. New tasks are handed out as they come in. Policies change weekly sometimes, depending on who finds a way to screw something up so bad that something has to be revised. (and it happens) Change is innevitable with any job description. I hope you come to terms with this and find peace in your current position. God bless…

That falls into the “and other duties as assigned” clause of the job description.

Everyone has those days when those other duties pile up - like being nibbled to death by guppies.

Thanks for listening to me gripe. Just need to get past this week (thankfully it’s almost over) and chalk it up to the fact that everyone has these little indiscretions from time to time and it’s not the end of the world. Just need to talk things out face to face w/ my boss.

Ahhh, looking forward to a dinner out w/ the girls tomorrow night and a fall family outing on Saturday. This should refresh the soul and maybe another trip to confession!
