Feeling disillusioned

I was reading a few articles on the National Catholic Fishwrap, just to see what’s going on in their funny world. But I after reading some of the articles, I feel so disheartened and this feeling I have about the Church has been building up over time.

I’m so tired of the American episcopacy standing by, or even abetting, heresies. Nuns in name only who are lead by a distorted notion of the primacy of conscience and ascribing their heresy to the Holy Spirit. Priests who do all sorts of nonsense, be it liturgical abuse, or supporting “small c catholic” beliefs.

I’m just so tired of the parade of nonsense going on in the American church. I watched an interview about Bishop Olmstedt & the St Joseph Hospital situation, and the poor man was vilified for his excommunicating that “sister.”

Why is it that our hospitals, universities, churches, are infected by heresy and modernism? Why don’t the Bishops take a stand against it? Why are we traditional Catholics relegated to a ghetto when the things we avow are orthodox?

I’m just so depressed. I know to pray about this, I do, but I can’t fight this feeling of being forlorn.
 
I feel the same way, and I think the situation is deplorable.

I can explain the first two. In a lot of cases institutions like hospitals and universities are being funded by the State, or being run by secular folks. The results are said institutions start doing things they shouldn’t be, or they are being forced to run certain programs and say certain things or they are going to be shut down. It’s a popular thing to \blame Jesuits for their schools not being orthodox, but in a lot of cases the Jesuits had to hand control over to other people, as the school is now run by others and receives public funding.

Steubinville was founded by Franciscans, run by Franciscans. They have total control over such things, which is why their school has remained fantastic.
 
Pray, pray, pray. We all need to pray for the Church. Maybe she is in one her darker times, but from these times she can grow and thrive!!!

Remember, no matter what is happening within the Church, she is still THE Church. Don’t forego truth because of it’s poor representative or representation. Instead, pray for Her. We already know that times can be difficult (as has been throughout history) but we also KNOW that the gates of Hell cannot prevail against Her.

If you go looking for faith-filled Catholics, good works, hardworking religious, and inspiring stories, you will find those things. You will find lots of things to brag about.

If we didn’t have complainers, we would never have growth.
 
I agree with both of you 1ke and Youngtrad. We need discussion, I just think sometimes we bog ourselves down with negativity. I also think we don’t need complaining, but objective criticism instead. Fact is we have alot to be proud of and we have alot to change. None of us should allow the pendulum to swing too far in one direction or we will either become prideful or we will despair.

So there, I just fixed everything :rolleyes:

Easier said than done though, lol 😉

I really think this is true. It’s simply not accurate that the bishops aren’t doing anything. Simply because they are not daily making headlines for excommunicating half their priests and three quarters of their sisters does not mean they are not taking their responsibilities very seriously. If you ever talk to a bishop, you’ll find out very quickly that they are much more keenly aware of what is at stake than any of us.

Of course we can find all sorts of negative things. We can find all sorts of second (or third or fourth) hand accounts on the internet or mysterious YouTube videos that can get us down. But we need to be very careful about letting those things cloud our vision. There’s lots of good stuff happening out there, too.
 
Sorry 1ke but you have to be blind not to see the evil going around our church. They are not hiding but out there in the open from our Bishops to Priest to lay folks. It has taken them less than 50 years to undo what has taken over 1500 years to build. There are a lot of us that are disillusioned and we complain because we love the Catholic Church not because we like to complain and go looking for things to complain about. It’s not hard to find and I don’t need to go looking far. The Faith in my diocese is dying and 48 Churches are planned to close.
 
I didn’t mean to sound like I was complaining at all.

Rather, I was just sharing my feelings to seek out understanding.

Prayer is most important, but silence on grave matters will get us nowhere.

1500 years, eh?

During that time, in the 1200’s the Church, was in such a sorry state of affairs that God raised not one, but **TWO **great men to become two of the greatest Saints the world has ever seen.

Turmoil within the Church is not limited to the last forty years, Dominic and Francis are proof of that.

Not to be overly cynical, though, right. 😉

Of course, 1ke can speak for herself, but I don’t construe her words as trying to “shut you up” because she’s so fond on kumbaya (have you even seen any of her posts here on CAF?).

I think that focusing on the negative is as much a danger to the faith as white-washing all our problems and pretending they don’t exist. It is dishonest to ignore all the good things going on out there. Complaining is not an effective means of evangelization. Who in their right mind would be attracted to the Catholic faith if the only Catholics they know complain about it all the time? When we are constantly going on and on about how scandalized we are, all we do is spread that scandal to others. That is not a service to the Church.

They have always been there my friend and they always will be. From the moment Christ established His Church the Devil has been working to tear it down. Good thing we already know who wins. I don’t think 1ke is trying to shut anyone up, and whether she takes offense or not, I take offense to your kumbaya comment. It’s unnecessary and it accomplishes nothing. This is the type of complaining I think 1k3 is talking about (although I should not put words in her mouth). Rational discussion is acceptable, even welcome. But, childish criticism and ill-tempered categorizations consume time without bearing any positive fruit.
 
I find it disheartening that the only thing we here about is Bishops and priest and religous that do not stand up of Chruch teaching. We never hear about it going the other way.
Lets look at an example of that in Louisville, KY Catholic health servies are working on a merger with the UofL hosptial the Archbishop has said that all service provideed as the hosp will be in line with church teaching therefore no abortion or sterialization will be preferred. this has caussed a uproar in Louisville. The Bishop is standing firm and say it will be this way or the merger will not happen.
Although this is not my bishop I am very much fully support him and pray that he remains strong.

We can alway find negative things to read I look for the Positive things. they are there in just as great numbers we just have to look harder to find them as the world does not want to talk about them not as much fun.

Fair enough. I can certainly understand your feeling that way. I think the best antidote is really just to look for the positive, because those positive things are out there.

When I get discouraged, I just compare the number of kids who went to see the Pope at World Youth Day to the number of people who attended the latest Call to Action conference. There is no comparison. 🙂

We certainly don’t want to sweep things under the rug and ignore them, but I think sometimes that the internet can make it easy for us to wring our hands over things we either have no control over or that we don’t have complete knowledge of. One could be driven to despair by going to YouTube and searching for “clown Mass” videos. But what good does it do the Body of Christ for me to view such videos that could have been recorded anywhere at any time? None whatsoever. Unless I am a first-hand witness who is in a position to bring the matter to the attention of someone who can actually do something about it, it accomplishes nothing but to skew my perception about the prevalence of clown Masses.

I’m not saying that you are doing this. I’m just using it as an example to illustrate my point. We can drive ourselves crazy with this sort of stuff if we allow it. Our best bet is to strive to foster the faith in whatever corner of Catholicism we find ourselves in. That is how change happens.

Very true.

I look at the Fishwrap to get a view from the other side. I guess in my attempt to be well rounded in matters of Catholic media, I’ve let myself be scandalized and glum. I ought to avoid it, but I don’t want to ignore it either, lest I come to think heresy doesn’t exist.
