In the past few years I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching and I found out just how immature I am when compared to my friends. One of them has already worked on a video game, many of them are really fit, have a job, doing well in school, gone through life experiences and met many people etc… whilst I’ve been mostly locked out of the loop so to speak.

If one read my previous threads you’d know all my problems; lack of friends, social awkwardness, having an emotionally abusive mother, a sexually abusive past, etc… when I look at myself I become confused and sad at how I brought myself so low and I agree with people, why would anyone want to be my friend?

I’m trying to remedy this by getting a job in the summer and doing some other long term pet projects and also fixing some of my social awkwardness but I just don’t see anything of worth inside me right now. I used to think I was ‘weird’ in a good way, that my passion for writing and storytelling and fiction were unique to me and a healthy pursuit but now, after realizing my own inexperience, my own innefficiency and the way people look at me. But right now I just don’t know what to do. I’m practically venting here but honestly, what’s my next move? What should I do?

Do not give up!

Be patient. Things can take time to change - it may take some time for you to slowly change aspects of yourself that you do not like - and some may not entirely change - or take a good deal of time. But be patient. Make good choices in how to work on such. Perhaps get some good advice from those you trust. etc. Knowing the areas your weaker is the beginning and can spur one to change -but also again -be patient. One step after the other…

Very importantly - given your “atheist -agnostic” description I propose to you -continuing to seek – and thus coming to know Jesus of Nazareth. Encountering him - knowing him - I came to know true life.

Today Christians celebrate the his resurrection - such was not simply a return to a old life or a bringing of a corpse back to life -but truly a new event.

I invite you to continue seeking --to come to know Jesus of Nazareth - to know true life in him.

Also for your reading:

“Life is not a simple product of laws and the randomness of matter, but within everything and at the same time above everything, there is a personal will, there is a Spirit who in Jesus has revealed himself as Love.”

–Pope Benedict XVI (Encyclical on Hope)

“We believe in God. This is a fundamental decision on our part. But again the question has to be asked: is this still possible today? Is it reasonable? From the Enlightenment on, science, at least in part, has applied itself to seeking an explanation of the world in which God would be unnecessary. And if this were so, he would also become unnecessary in our lives. But whenever the attempt seemed to be nearing success - inevitably it would become clear: something is missing from the equation! When God is subtracted, something doesn’t add up for man, the world, the whole universe. So we end up with two alternatives. What came first? Creative Reason, the Creator Spirit who makes all things and gives them growth, or Unreason, which, lacking any meaning, yet somehow brings forth a mathematically ordered cosmos, as well as man and his reason. The latter, however, would then be nothing more than a chance result of evolution and thus, in the end, equally meaningless. As Christians, we say: “I believe in God the Father, the Creator of heaven and earth” -I believe in the Creator Spirit. We believe that at the beginning of everything is the eternal Word, with Reason and not Unreason.”

– Pope Benedict XVI (12 Sept 2006 Homily in Regensburg)

"The resurrection, then, is not a theory, but a historical reality revealed by the man Jesus Christ by means of his “Passover”, his “passage”, that has opened a “new way” between heaven and earth (cf. Heb 10:20). It is neither a myth nor a dream, it is not a vision or a utopia, it is not a fairy tale, but it is a singular and unrepeatable event: Jesus of Nazareth, son of Mary, who at dusk on Friday was taken down from the Cross and buried, has victoriously left the tomb. In fact, at dawn on the first day after the Sabbath, Peter and John found the tomb empty. Mary Magdalene and the other women encountered the risen Jesus. On the way to Emmaus the two disciples recognized him at the breaking of the bread. The Risen One appeared to the Apostles that evening in the Upper Room and then to many other disciples in Galilee. "

-Pope Benedict XVI Urbi et Orbi message 2009

You haven’t given us much to go on. Tell us how old you are, how much education you have, what country you live in, what interests you have besides writing, etc.

Without any more to go on I would say that you need to get a good hours exercise every day, walking, bike riding, swiming, ordinary calesentics, etc. Try to join a good club to get some socialize, do some volunteer work on a regular basis. Get a good bible and start reading it. Personally, I don’t see how an non-believer can ever be happy. Get a regular job, it doesn’t matter what, as long as its honest.

Stay away from drugs and alcohol. These solve nothing, always makes things worse.

Sorry you have had such a hard time. will pray for you.

Doing well in school, being fit, working on a video game…none of these themselves equal maturity.

Some of the most immature people imaginable have done all of the above, so maybe you need to define what maturity means, both to you and objectively.

I get the feeling you’ll be fine.

a) Are you still an agnostic?
b) Do you think there is an amount of success that makes people happy or an amount of attainment that makes them satisfied with their lives? If attaining goals and being surrounded by admirers made people happy, why is it that so many people who have “professionally arrived” still find their lives empty and pointless?

You cannot impress yourself into happiness. Living to impress other people does not bring people closer to you–it never will! It cannot! The world is full of people running around trying to be impressive enough to fit in. They are playing a losing game. Trying to impress yourself is even harder than impressing everyone else. If you don’t believe me, look around. The people who are both happy and successful do not depend on their successes to make them happy. They depend on what really gives joy in order to sustain them both through failures and successes.

There are two things that do sustain people through both pleasure and pain, success and failure: the love of God and the love of neighbor. The two go together. Look in that direction for what you seek. Put that foundation under you, and from that spot look for what projects might be good ones to pursue.

Have you ever sought counseling for the sexual abuse? If someone has been through some major traumas in the past, the present could be picture perfect, and often times, due to all that baggage, a person very well might not be in a position to be open to, or appreciate it, unfortunately.

Sometimes, it is helpful to speak to someone, get it off your chest. You mentioned it in this post, so it means this isn’t over, that it is definitely still very much bothering you, still.

I agree about the above poster that having a certain job, or business, doesn’t necessarily mean one is mature.
