Hi all.

I’m hoping it’s okay to post this here. As far as I can tell it should be fine, but if not then accept my apologies and please delete the thread. 🙂

I’m currently in the process of discernment, as I know many of us here are - however, I am currently living alone in a country where English is not the primary language and I have only a very, very basic command of the local language.

This is good in many ways, as it removes a lot of the “noise” of everyday life - but quite isolating as nobody (at least nobody I have yet met) at my local church speaks my language. 😦

I was wondering if there were any online resources - other than CAF obviously - where women discerning their vocation shared experiences and support?

Failing that would anyone like a penpal (:compcoff: email or PM) to travel the road with for a while?

I’m currently considering a few orders including the Dominicans and am in my 40s - but would welcome contact with any other women in discernment.

Please feel free to PM me. 🙂

:blessyou:

Hello and welcome.
I want to join the Dominicans, too - and my problem is that I live in non-catholic country. Only two dominican congregations present here, and both have age restrictions. I’m already 33, and some congregations don’t accept women older than 30 (Isn’t that harsh!) May be I would have to move to another country; right now I consider Italy. I’m in contact with one small dominican congregation from Florence…

My story was, shortly, posted here:
forums.catholic-questions.org/showpost.php?p=4035213&postcount=210

There is a Livejournal community for women discerners, but it’s not very active lately.
community.livejournal.com/womenvocations/

I would like to know other vocation-related forums, too 🙂

You might try the Phatmass Phorum for Vocations, though, if you don’t have an account already, it’s a little tricky. Here’s the link:

phatmass.com/phorum/index.php?showforum=17

What you have to do is make an account and then post 10 posts on either the Open Mic or other forums except the middle section. Then, when you get up to 10, the “Vocation Station” is unlocked and you are free to post anywhere. Don’t know why they locked it  but it is. God bless you!👍

Hi all,

Many thanks for your replies. I registered at Phatmass and have taken a look at Cloister Outreach - but I am a bit unsure as to whether Outreach is only for those looking at contemplative or cloistered orders?

I also took a look at a couple of blog webrings I found, but most of these were from people who had completed their discernment. (Some were great to look at though!) 🙂

Anyhows, in the meantime as a temporary measure and if anyone is interested I’ve set up a yahoogroup as:

“A discussion and support group for women who are actively discerning, or have already discerned, their Baptismal vocation.”

If anyone would like to take part please do. There are no archives, so it will be more possible to speak freely. I’ve set it to require approval to join but that is just to prevent spammers.

If it isn’t needed no probs, I can delete it after a while if there is no interest. 🙂

Here are the details

Anyone to any kind of vocation is welcome on our boards.

Blessings,

Thanks for the links, Cloisters. I joined (and started flooding :)))
Well, your groups game me an idea to look better for dominican sisters in England. Joining a congregation in England will be nice for me, because there would be no language problem… and it’s not as far away as US 🙂

Another discerner on another forum is interested in the Dominican sisters of St. Joseph in the UK.

their website is;

dominicansrs.co.uk/

I’m discerning contemplative communities that accept late vocations. I’m 43, a widow, and my youngest child is almost 16. Maybe when he leaves the nest…

My understanding is that your dependent must be at least 18 and completely independent. That doesn’t mean that you can’t start discerning now, as it may take some time for you to find a community and for it to find you.

Yes, 18 and independent. That’s why I’m waiting. I’m just now starting to contact communities. I still have to ask my parish priest if he is willing/able to by my spiritual advisor. I have plenty of time, and I’m not rushing things. If it’s God’s will, it will be done in God’s time. 🙂

N4:

I don’t have a yahoo address so I don’t think I can do the group link, but if you’re interested and have MSN messenger, I’d love to be a penpal with you.

I think I have mostly discerned that my vocation is to the religious life, but there are still a few bumps in the road (I entered an order that wasn’t quite a fit, so now I’m working on my masters and will be teaching some college classes in China next year - hoping to do some orphanage work while I’m there, and see if God leads me to an order during that time).

I’d love to have someone to talk with because I don’t have so many Catholic friends where I live, but please don’t feel pressured.

Good to hear from you!

Patricia

P.S. If anyone else has MSN and would like to support each other in our discernment and spiritual journeys, please just let me know!
