I have a friend who first off believes very deeply in the political beliefs of the republican party as well as his personal catholic beliefs, having said that he plans in the near future to run for public office whould you vote for a man who shares the same beliefs as you but is gay. I have known him for years and while he accepts his homosexualtiy he has never engaged in homosexual activites he has led a chaste life so naturally I cant put to many details because he still hasnt come out and I dont want him to know but I do plan on running his campain when he is ready one last point he has also served in the military so with that basic information would you consider voting for him even though hes gay

His orientation has nothing to do with his ability to hold office effectively. If I agreed with his governing philosophy, I’d vote for him. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t… how is this controversial?

Its not hes considering coming out and I’m basically testing the waters. hes a good man I have seen too many times people get overwhelmed by the media and sometimes themselves when they come out as gay because it becomes the number one qualifier that becomes used whenever they say anything and I dont want his message to become waylaid by something like this

SSA isn’t sinful. So long as he isn’t promoting things like same sex marriage, etc, I wouldn’t have a problem with that facet of his life. I’d certainly make my decision on whether or not he is conservative enough for me (not many are) :D; not based on who he’s attracted to. Of course, depending on upcoming rulings by the Supreme Court of the United States, I may or may not ever cast a vote again. If they strike down California prop 8 and basically dismiss the will of the voters, what’s the use? No need to vote anymore, if the courts can override the will of the people… but that’s another topic.

As a Republican, I personally think that it would be absolutely WONDERFUL and supercalifragilisticexpialidocius! if a gay man or lesbian who has come out and professed chastity would run for a REPUBLICAN political office! WOW! The only thing better would be if that homosexual or lesbian Republican also happened to be Hispanic or African-American!!! Wow, we would so win that election!!! And it would be so fun to see the media confounded and confused and tip-toeing around this candidate!!! :dancing::extrahappy:

Does this person by any chance live in Northern Illinois? If so, I’ll join his campaign! Wow. Please tell me this post isn’t a troll post. You give me hope!

But…to me, the important thing is, “Does the Republican (or rarely, the Democrat) have a pro-life voting record, or if the person has never been involved in politics, do they have a public history of pro-life activities in the community (are they endorsed by local pro-life groups?), and do they speak up boldly and without apology for pro-life causes and pledge to vote for pro-life legislation?”

I’d vote for him. As long has he’s living chastely (what all singles are called to do) he’s a wonderful example of God’s grace at work in one who suffers from SSA. This is surely an example this country *desperately *needs! 👍

I don’t really consider myself Democrat or Republican. I’ve voted for both in the past. I voted for a Republican Senator in 2010 and then two years later, I voted to re-elect Obama, for example. I checked out this thread because I found the title very interesting.

It’s 2013… this kind of thing shouldn’t matter. The only thing that matters is where he stands on issues. If he’s got a better platform than his Democratic opponent, I’d vote for him. If it’s going to be an issue in his party’s primary, perhaps he should consider cross-filing with the Democratic Party to run (if his area’s election rules allow him to do that)? He can also always run as an Independent, and a gay Republican might be an interesting variable in a traditional Democrat vs. Republican race.

If he would run, I would hope he would be honest about himself - and proud of who he is. None if this “I’m gay and I’m so ashamed of it and I swear I haven’t acted on it and look, here’s my trophy girlfriend” nonsense. The only reason that I would not vote for someone for being gay is if they actively tried to hide it or were ashamed of it, or lied to themselves or their family by saying that they were, in actuality, straight.

I know someone who ran as an out and proud gay man that ran for office in my area. He was a bright kid with a good head on his shoulders and his policies made a lot of sense; .Just as importantly, he had guts. I was happy to have voted for him, and I’ll tell you what, so were thousands of others, and this was back in 2010-2011 and he continues to make us all proud.

I hope you advise your friend well, and if he does decide to run, please wish him luck for me in the race!

Better to come out on his own terms than be “outted” by an opponet’s campaign.

Absolutely, I don’t care that he has inclinations towards the same sex as long as he recognizes it’s a sin, and will not promote the gay agenda. I would, however, question it if he were to come out. I believe if he made a point to let everyone know he is gay that he most likely would also support the gay agenda.

I don’t see why people who know homosexuality is wrong yet are tempted towards it insist on identifying themselves with their temptation. After all a straight married man doesn’t run around telling everyone he is attracted to women other then his wife.

First of all, I certainly would support such a candidate. However, I would also urge him to think carefully about his campaign and how he plans to “come out” as a chaste homosexual. He will lose some support based on that disclosure, and he may make some enemies in the GLBT activist world because of his chastity. He’s SSA but not gay, as it were, and that will be a problem for those who think there is nothing whatsoever wrong with gay sex. I don’t know what the answer will be, but I would urge him to think very carefully going forward.

Please give him all my best, though. I am not a Republican, however. Nor a Libertarian, and certainly not a Democrat. I’m uncategorizable in the current political climate. I’m just Catholic.

Some may object to his sexual orientation, others to his chastity, I would not object to either. I’m not a Republican, though, so I might not agree with his political convictions. 🙂

I think the reason to come out in a situation like this would be to control the message. In other words, he could say, I am homosexual, but I do not engage in homosexual activities, I live a chaste life, and I do not support homosexual marriage, etc.

If he didn’t come out, and the opponent found out about it, he could easily spin it as the person was lying or covering things up and cast doubt on his character.

As someone who has worked on a few campaigns, and ran a campaign, I can say that I would advice coming out and controlling the message. Having SSA is not a sin, but acting on it is. This person can demonstrate that and be an example to others, especially young people that are struggling with SSA.

As a Republican he likely would not have a lot of LGBT support to begin with that he would have to worry about losing.

That’s true. What he would have to face, and should be massively prepared for, is fellow SSA’s who are active to castigate him for his chastity and the media to insist that he support the LGBT cause or be thought a hypocrite. It’s not his fellow conservatives he has to worry about, it’s the liberals who would not want an SSA person interferring with their attempts to “normalize” abnormal sexual behavior. Note I said abnormal behavior, not orientation. But to those liberals who support the LGBT causes there is no difference nor should there be any difference as far as they’re concerned. If he’s not prepared to meet their ire, he’d better not run. It might be better for him to work behind the scenes supporting a candidate that won’t get attention for the wrong reasons or set off those who would attack him for being chaste. It’s a sad reality that he would be hounded unmercifully by those on the left who would insist he go their way or no way and the media would be on their side, not his. I’m just saying that’s the reality of the situation–not how it ought to be. If he wants to fight that attitude, he’ll in the fight of his life, and any other issues he may want to raise would be completely obscured–and deliberately so by those who would oppose him for not supporting the left wing LGBT agenda.

There may be a chance that this person did have a sexual past that could be dredged up, and that would be used to smear him and ruin his reputation. It could be brutal. The more I think about it, the more I’m inclined to agree that this person might be better off working for another candidate, not running himself.

Well that’s really the problem - that he would be targeted as their enemy since he shows the world that it’s possible to be SSA and also chaste.

if he is actually “chaste”, why would he have to admit to being gay?

I don’t think that we should be encouraging people that are living moral lives to stay in the background or on the sidelines based on what their opponents might say/do.
