I prefer male altar servers, but parents today are more interested in having their sons playing sports or some other activity than being an altar server. They don’t want to be bothered with at least dropping their son off at the chruch.
I agree. I am in charge of recruiting, training, and scheduling of altar servers and I very much see this as the case. Of course, it isn’t across the board, but all too frequently people (this applies to adults, too) will take on the committment, but only around their other activities. Even then they often need subs, and later drop out because of other things going on. I almost think they may not, I didn’t say don’t!, even go to church at all, because otherwise they could switch with someone from another Mass or, if they are there, why can’t they serve?
