I am a 24 year old single male. I am a college graduate and have a full time job. Currently, I live with my parents and commute and hour each way to work. I answered an newspaper ad on someone looking for a roommate and turns out, that person is female. I spoke to her by phone and she mentioned she would prefer a guy roommate just for the safety of the home. I have not physically met her yet and was wondering if I could do this or not.

I don’t see an issue with it. You would be living with a member of the opposite sex but you two aren’t dating. So, don’t date her or sleep in the same room and you should be fine.

You can find somebody else to room with.

A housemate situation with a large mixed group would be different.

You should definitely meet her and also check out the room. Is it an apartment or house? What will the restroom situation be (private or share) You can usually tell right away if you both feel comfortable, have some rapport and like the room. Also are you or both of you single? If that happens, you might even start dating! Be sure to set boundaries before you move in though and always be honest and up front with each other.

He could…but in his situation, if he takes the room, would he be “sinning”?

Q: Female Roommate…yes or no?

No.

Want another answer?

No.

Third will be similar.

Most likely, yes. He has no compelling reason to room with this particular lady, this is just a random person whose add he answered. There are plenty of other people he could room with. However, he is likely to cause scandal by this arrangement and my put either himself or the lady in the near occasion of sin.

“Near occasion of sin”. If he is just rooming with this woman, there is no sin. What if the woman was a 55 year old widow? What if he roomed with a gay man?

NO. You are playing with fire if you decide to live with this women.

Definitely meet her first. I have had great female roommates before and still remain friends with them since we have not lived together anymore. (as roommates) We both were in relationships at the time and it worked out great.

I don’t think it’s a sin, and who knows? Meet her first. You might be totally incompatible in terms of potential sin.

However, would I do it? Aside from marriage, I can’t fathom why a man would want to live with a woman. 😛

Bad idea, near occasion of sin.

Lots of people are looking for roommates, especially in this economy. You should easily be able to find male roommates.

I don’t think it’s a great idea at all. As a woman, the idea of my boyfriend living with another woman would bother me quite a bit. However, I don’t know that it’s a sin where you aren’t dating. If you decide to proceed, I’d make sure that it’s a woman who you have like zero attraction to or there is a definite potential for temptation. If it were a situation of a woman old enough to be your mother, I might say it was fine because it has a different appearance to the outside world.

It could be scandal in some cases. It could be near occasion of sin in some cases. What I don’t understand is why so many Catholics seem to think it will always be the latter. Do some of the people on this thread really, truly believe that ANY random man will be seriously tempted by ANY random woman? I have a much higher opinion of people, even secular people, and their ability to control themselves. I a man and I have had numerous close female friends who I could never ever, under any circumstances, be tempted by in a sexual manner…sexual attraction simply isn’t there. There may be various reasons why it isn’t ideal for a single man and a single woman to live as roommates, but it should not be ASSUMED that there will be near occasion of sin. In regards to scandal, this is also subjective. In many places, it is now quite common for men and women, especially students, to live as platonic roommates, without any expectation or assumption of sexual or romantic activity.

I concur wholeheartedly.

I currently have a male roommate. I do not recommend it at all.

Causing scandal is a sin. There are no maybe’s or occasions about it. People seeing you live together is scandalous and therefore a sin. You will have to stop taking communion until this sin is stopped or you will be taking the Eucharistic unworthily.

Given the OP hasn’t replied, I’m getting the feeling this thread was created to aggravate the usual suspects on here who faint at the sight of a bare leg.
