Hello all. As a Catholic I (and all of you) believe that the feminist movement of the 1960s-70s contained fatal errors. Chief among these was the promotion of contraception, abortion, free “love” and the misguided belief that men and women are equal in all things and are the “same”.
I have heard many Catholic priests and youth speakers denounce “new age” feminism for these reasons. But I feel they really don’t give feminism its due. It has done a lot of good, even the 60s and 70s kind.
Becuase of these newer feminists, sexual harassment has become a public issue and is no longer considered OK to do. Because of them women cannot be fired for their appearance or age. Also because of them women cannot be paid less for equal work.
But I believe “new wave” feminism’s greatest contributions to society came in the areas of sexual violence awareness and prevention. Because of them women who have been assaulted can report their crime to police and get their attacker locked up without being stigmatized or shamed into silence.
I don’t know, but I strongly suspect that new wave feminism also contributed to the greater awareness and prevention of child sexual abuse. I do know that before the early 1980s, CSA was shrouded in shame, silence, and secrecy, and practically never made the headlines or evening news.Perhaps the greater sensitivity toward female victims of abuse was extended toward children as well.
What do y’all think?
