The thread on buying from a store that sells the abortion pill got me thinking. My wife has recently been diagnosed with a condition that causes infertility and was referred to a fertility clinic for treatment. This particular clinic specializes in IVF (IVF is actually part of its name). She has been receiving treatment from this clinic for a couple of months now and is starting to show some progress, but I have begun to wonder about the situation. Although her treatment plan does not and will not involve IVF in any way, shape, or form (we made this very clear), are we somehow sinning by patronizing this clinic? My thoughts are that we are OK as long as we only engage in morally licit treatments, but I am not sure. Is this thinking correct, or am I missing something?

My urologist performs vasectomies as part of his practice. The whole world sins as part of its practice.

My honest opinion is for you and your wife to seek the medical treatments that are morally correct for you guys and let God handle the behaviour of the clinic. If we were to stay away from every commercial and medical establishment that is immoral we would not be able to function. Society is very immoral as a whole and as individuals we need to continue, by example, to hold firm to our Christian beliefs within the world that God provides. He allows immorality for reasons that we do not understand now. Maybe it’s for the contrast that you present here. One can never know that a line is straight if no crooked lines existed.

You guys are o.k. IMHO. Talk with a priest if you really would like guidance from the Church but I’ve even found their thoughts to vary on situations such as these.

God bless you both. If it be the will of God, when you have children remember that they are a gift. God entrusts them to you and through your guidance they can grow up and mirror your morality. We can only change the world one heart at a time and you sound like the people who are the change you wish to see…Merry Christmas…teachccd 🙂

First of all, I wish you and your wife the best in a successful outcome. This can be a very tough issue to deal with.

I assume that whatever your wife is having done is a fairly specialized treatment that has to be done at this kind of clinic. It’s not just popping a pill that your general practice doctor could give her. IMHO, I don’t see a moral problem; however, say a prayer for the souls who have been put into suspended animation by the IVF procedure. Most of them will not survive the procedure in store for them.

No, you are not sinning-- as was pointed out in that other thread.

If you feel like patronizing them is causing you spiritual unrest, why not contact the Pope Paul VI Institute, whose treatments are all within Catholic teaching? www.popepaulvi.com

They have many trained doctors affiliated with them-- even one in my little po-dunk town.

Can’t hurt to contact them.

slightly OT, but does anybody else notice that in matters of fertility, the World seems to be trying to circumvent God’s Will?

Folks are either trying to prevent God from creating life through abortion or contraception or, when found to be infertile (often because of the aforementioned), trying to “assist” Him by IVF.

If, as a couple, you find youselves infertile through some physical defect and the problem is correctible through medcial means, hey, go for it. God gave the medical profession wisdom to correct these issues. As long as what you’re doing involves correcting a problem that arises from a defect (blockes plumbing, hormonal issues, etc.) and is not seeking to conceive a child through artificial means (IVF/Artifical insemination), you are doing nothing immoral, regardless of whatever else the clinic may be doing in other cases.

God likes babies. That’s why He makes so many of them.

It’s important to read the Catechism and understand the basis of the Churches moral teaching so that you can make reasonable judgements when offered various treatments. If in doubt ask your pastor or ask him for the name of a priest who is a expert in Catholic bio-ethics.

Thanks to all who have responded. You have pretty much confirmed what I had been thinking. For the moment we are going to continue the current course of treatment, but I will be contacting the Pope Pual VI Institute to see if there are any practictioners in my area who use their methods. Thanks again.
