If you think about it, in one way, it is kind of odd to have a Sunday that is called “Trinity Sunday,” I mean, after all, it’s not like the other Sundays in the Church Year are not about the Holy Trinity, in one way, or the other. But the first Sunday after Pentecost has, now for nearly 1,000 years, in the Western Church, been devoted to observing and celebrating, and most important, teaching the doctrine of the Holy Trinity.
Let’s be clear, absolutely, totally and completely clear: there is no God but the Trinity, and no salvation outside of the Trinity. Why? Because God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit is the one, true God. There are no other gods. Allah is not the one, true God. The gods of Hinduism or any other religion are false gods. The god of rabbinic Judaism is not the one, true God.
There is One God, who is One God, in Three Persons. In the Old Testament, He reveals His name as YHWH, most often pronounced “Yah-way,” emphasis on the first syllable. The graphic in this post are the four Hebrew letters used for YHWH. The reason Jesus of Nazareth infuriated the Jews, as recorded in John 8, is that he had the unmitigated gall to tell them that unless they follow and believe his word, they would not have eternal life, then, he proceeded to inform them that “Before Abraham was, I am.”
Did you get that? He said, “I am.” This is the name: “YHWH” which means, being translated, “The Being One, the One who is.” In other words, “I am!” You see, friends, we do not worship, simply “God” or “The Lord." We worship the God who reveals Himself to us as YHWH. And it is this God, who is revealed to us as One diving being, in three persons, into whose name we are baptized: Father, Son and Holy Spirit! Each time we say “Hallelujah!” in church we are saying, “Praise Yahweh!”
And here’s the really most amazing thing about YHWH. He loves YOU and sent His Son into the world to live for you, to die for you and to rise again, for you. He calls you into communion with Himself, into the fellowship of love that is what the Trinity is all about!
Praised be the Lord,
my God, my light, my life,
my Creator, who has
given me my body and soul;
my Father, who has protected me
from my mother’s womb,
who at every moment
does much good for me.
Praised be the Lord,
my God, my light, my life,
the most beloved Son of the Father,
who gave Himself for me,
who has redeemed me
with His precious blood,
who in faith presents
Himself to me, the highest good.
Praised be the Lord,
my God, my comfort, my life,
the worthy Spirit of the Father,
which the Son gave to me,
who revives my heart,
who gives me new strength,
who in all trouble
creates wisdom, comfort and aid.
Praised be the Lord,
my God, who lives forever,
whom all things praise, that
soar in the air;
praised be the Lord,
whose name is called holy,
God the Father, God the Son,
and God the Holy Spirit.
To whom we now
let “holy” ring forth with joy,
and with the throng of angels
sing “holy, holy, holy”
who is heartily honored and praised
by all of Christianity:
praised be my God
in all eternity!
