More than likely, at the age of 30, I would hope that his strip club days are over…at least now…

You only know. Really deep down, you know whether you should marry him or not. Money…can’t take it to heaven with you. This little deposit will be pale in comparison if you have a cheating husband. However, he could be the best husband and father in the world…again, only you know.

Men are so stupid sometimes…why do men want to do this mess…ugh! No wonder God made a woman … and no, it wasn’t for a lap dance! 😛

I promise that I will pray for you.

Answers to other questions…

I think his brother drove them to the strip club. I’m not sure how much he had to drink, but yes, thank God everyone is okay. It was in St. Louis. Apparently, the East Side has all sorts of strip clubs.

I think he messed up because of the presence of alcohol and the presence of an old childhood friend (who is definitely not the best influence). Neither of these things are excuses, but I don’t see his behavior on Saturday night as indicative of who he truly is (I hope!).
This type of mature thinking and insight will serve you both and your marriage well. As well, after his confession, I would bet he will strongly reflect on this, occasion of sin and those who surrounded/help lead him there.

I love this quote from Michele Arnold one of the Apologist on CAF.

Michelle Arnold:
“It is important to remember the purpose of marriage: To provide for each spouse a partner to help him or her on the road to heaven. It is a vocation that forms the partners in sanctity, whether or not their marriage is blessed with children.”

Also this makes a great little note taped somewhere special in both your current residences.👍

I, “StripClubGoer” take you, “AlmostMarried”
to be my lawful wife.
to have and to hold,
I promise to be true to you
in good times and in bad,
in sickness and in health.
I will love you and honor you
all the days of my life.

Oh, don’t forget to change the names.😉

I think time is what heals wounds like this.

If you really feel he is sorry, and you believe him in this, then there won’t be any issues for the future.

It actually kind of sounds like you are more upset at yourself, for not being able to forgive him easily, than you actually are with him!!! Trying to be a loving , caring forgiving person is all very well and good, but golly gosh, you can also give yourself a break. Please dont’ beat yourself up, because you are angry. You have the right to be, and he just needs to be very patient right now, and accept your feelings.

Just give it some time, and you’ll be okay. 🙂

I think, for a truly faithful Catholic person, willingly visiting a strip club AND willingly enjoying a LAPDANCE is cause for concern.

First, sins against purity are so so so addictive. While he may not be a frequent “user”, he has now allowed himself to be exposed to something very addictive. His level of genuine faith will play a major role in avoiding addiction.

To me, either you think porn/strip clubs/lapdances/strippers/etc are acceptable or you do not. If you do not, you won’t have a hard time turning down a lap dance much like a non-smoker doesn’t have a hard time turning down a cigarette.

Generally speaking, a person who is fundamentally opposed to the porn/strip club “culture” will not accidentally engage in it. That’d be like non-smokers periodically having a cigarette.

According to Jesus, even looking at someone with a lustful heart is committing adultery. In our current culture, we just completely ignore that one. Hey, boys, let’s go to Hooters…for the wings, yeah, for the wings.

These days movies, television, and even tv commercials (like diet ones) are occasions for sin for many people.

Only you can decide if you are ready to marry him. Keep in mind that those kinds of things can be so addictive. If, years down the road, you find porn (magazines, dvds, or online), you will need a great deal of faith and compassion to help him quit.

Here is the actual verse I mentioned.

Matthew 5

28 But I say to you, that whosoever shall look on a woman to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Women can be ‘stupid’ as well…I have known many women who mess up perfectly decent relationships/engagements/marriages, because they wanted to flirt with men…or had affairs…or sought men out online…etc…

Women might not hang out at strip clubs, but like men, they too can succomb to temptations, and ruin good relationships.

To be honest, I think you’ve got a great future husband! He made a mistake, was honest about it, and feels horrible about it.

For those who say the marriage would be invalid (?!), thats crazy! I also doubt you’d need marriage counseling.

Not being a guy, I obviously don’t know the power of male bonding and peer pressure when it comes to strip clubs. It was a bad decision, no doubt, but I think you can definitely trust him.

Lots of guys I’ve dated wouldn’t have admitted that they had gone in the first place. Or if I made a big deal about it would say “Whats the big deal?” 🙂

I think you’ve got a keeper. Don’t be too hard on him. Or yourself. It sounds to me like he’s repented and feels horrible about the decision.

You are certainly allowed to feel hurt. But, forgiveness is a decision that you make for yourself, not for him. Forgiveness says that you will let go of the hurt and anger and not allow yourself to be victimized by them anymore. Yes, he will have to win back your trust. It’s up to you how difficult that will be. If you hold onto the hurt, it’ll take longer. If you can forgive and let go of the hurt and anger, it won’t take as long. It seems to me, based on what you wrote, that he made a serious mistake and is sincerely sorry for it. I doubt that anything like that will happen again.
I hope you both can work this out.

Peace,
Linda

I was going to make a new thread about this and maybe I will…but…

are there some Catholic couples who do not have these kinds of bachelor parties? I am against typical bachelor parties…

or any bachelor parties for that matter.

Most practicing Christians (includling non-Catholic Christians) do not have immoral bachelor parties. My non-Catholic Christian family members who were married last year - two couples - none of them had anything like this. They had nice get togethers with family and friends before the wedding.

I know several recently married Catholic couples, and NONE of the men had immoral bachelor parties.

There’s nothing wrong with having a bachelor party if nothing immoral happens. For the last bachelor party I went to, we went to a shooting range. No problems there.

Ok thanks for telling me this.

Whenever I think of bachelor/ette parties, I had thought of the typical secular rowdy ones with drinking and hired strippers and stuff.

I’m glad to know that there are those with reservations about this. It helps me feel a lot better.

I don’t think I could marry a guy who consented to be one of thirty or forty guys whose crotch a stripper was paid to gyrate upon that night.

But that’s just me. The OP has stated that she won’t postpone or cancel the wedding. That’s her embarassment talking. I just hope we don’t see her here in five years with two kids, and a husband who still drinks to excess and pays strippers to gyrate on his crotch. Or worse…

There are mistakes, and there are character flaws…

We had a co-party since we have mutual friends. It was at Dave and Buster’s…we had a ton of fun! And some of my bridesmaids were under 21 so we had built in designated drivers, too. 😃

She needs to know about his character, and his faith, now, not what it was in the past.

If he has a sinful past, and has repented, she shouldn’t hold his past against him, and knowing will just anger her.
I agree with bilop here. I have known of at least one marriage that was destroyed by indiscretion which was repented of and never occurred again, because the husband, against all advice, confessed it to his wife, thereby conpounding the hurt to her to relieve himself of the guilt. The marriage would not have ended otherwise.

It also seems somewhat odd to me that this isolated incident related by the OP, apparently brought on by male peer pressure, and now repented of, is causing so much concern, while the fiance’s actual prior sexual history does not seem to bother her. Is it worse to have gone to a strip joint once, or to have engaged in fornication?

I’m also looking at the obverse angle here: if this incident is cause for this much concern (after repentance and apologies), how will she react to future stumbling blocks in married life? Perhaps this is cause for him to be concerned.

No strip clubs at my bachelor party. The guys and I went out of town, had a great time. My best friend and one other guy were pretty dead set on going to a strip club. I imformed them if they did, they would know what bar in downtown Charleston to find me at when they got done. Didn’t go over too well with those 2 until I told them that if they were really my friends, they would respect my wishes and not drag me off to a strip club. That settles it right there.

IMHO, if someone is educated on the sacred nature of sex in marriage (Theology of the Body), then going along with the guys and buying lap dances is more than just a little slip. Maybe that’s the norm in our culture, but it is extremely demeaning to all parties involved and shows a tremendous lack of respect for the human person. I would be careful of letting this one go by easily. The embarrassment and hassle of a postponed wedding is nothing to compared to dealing with betrayal in marriage later. What a terrible memory to have leading to such an important event in your life. If the marriage is supposed to happen, it can happen later, when you can enter it with joy and no reservations.

My fiance rarely drinks, but there have been a few times in the past when he has drunk too much when out with friends and started saying “jerky” things (calling people gay, making fun of people of other races, etc.). When I let him know that I was not okay with that, he made changes, and the behaviors stopped (not just because of me-he thought it was wrong too). I just don’t want responses where people say he’s an alcoholic, because he’s definitely not. He knows that on those rare times when he does drink, it has the potential to cause him to be a person he doesn’t want to be…that’s why he wants to make changes now (like not drinking at all).
To me, the whole “he doesn’t get drunk often but when he does…” scenario is itself a red flag. Are you willing to risk him getting drunk again, and if he does, what might be the next jerky thing that happens? He could say something “jerky” to the wrong person who has a .45 and you could be a widow. Or, he could decide to get in the car with you or one or more of the chidlren and an accident could occur. I know you might think I’m sounding an irrational alarm, but there was a thread on here recently about a wife whose husband wanted them all to go out in dangerous weather conditions to a bar (and take the small child with) after midnight and after they had been drinking.

Interesting point.

AlmostMarried, if you yourself are a virgin, perhaps you should reconsider whether you want to give 100% to a man who is not giving the same 100% back to you. Don’t sell yourself short - you’ve EARNED it!!! Don’t be afraid to insist on what you have earned. (I know some may be offended by this and consider it unforgiving, but maybe using this as leverage will send a chill down his spine and serve as a wake-up call, and if he does lose you to a male virgin it could drill into his head that it “pays to obey the rules” and that may be the wake-up call he needs for the sake of the next woman he meets).

JimG and Norseman…
I can’t adequately explain how distasteful I find your posts.
Not only does it seem you find virginity the sole and most important thing in a person. Let me remind you though that chastity and virginity are not the same. The first is a crown you have earned through hard work… the second is a free gift from God.
Have any of you ever been in a very serious relationship as adults where the one you were with tempted you? If not, then you are really cheap in saying what you do. How easy it is for you!

Last year I had a really deep relationship with a man and over a long time where we really could not avoid the near occasion of sin we fell. That has caused me a depression you cannot even imagine. Going on catholic.com I received so much comfort… one thing the people here reminded me was : “We have ALL sinned and fallen short…” and “Jesus is our sole righteousness”. They also agreed that a man who would not be interested in me now because of the fall in my past I should not care about because I would not want a man who had no compassion and humility. Since then I met a christian guy who was older than me and still a virgin. he said that he could not dream of finding me impure or unfit since Jesus Christ Himself is dwelling within me and has cleansed me from all my sin… then who was he to have reservations, knowing well that he too could have fallen very easily if he had really been tried at a certain time. Selv-knowlege is a precious pearl. Peter did not have it… you do not have it. Your trial will surely come.
Yes… by your fleshy standards you have a “right” to a lot of things… you holy men… but in the eyes of God you deserve hell like all the rest of us. Don’t you forget that. And in case you dont believe in the CLEANSING power of Confession, that the OP believes in for certain, then you should keep your disbelief to your selves. Did you ever read: “I abandon their sin and remember them no more”. those are words of God in the Old Testament… as an example to follow. How can you in your right mind call a fellow sister into petty and unforgiving thoughts towards a man that she loves??? I doubt you have ever experienced a love that makes all things new… Shame on you for wanting to put venom in a young woman’s heart!
Have any of you ever stolen, gotten drunk, lied, masturbated, been proud, had lustful thoughts? Then do you think you deserve a pious lady? - will not you in all your hope for mercy, hope that you find a woman who will see you instead of your numerous sins? I will remind you lastly that pride is on the top list of death sins… sins of the flesh are at the bottom…
Learn humility.

We are not the sum of our failures… we are the sum of The Fathers love for us. (Pope JPII)

To the OP: Go and love your boyfriend… believe me…its so much harder to be the sinner than to be the righteous.
😦

Listen to this song and watch the video… It might help put things into the right perspective…

youtube.com/watch?v=KKU2kgwnjOs

The singer sings: “I found a reason to change who I used to be, and start over anew.” The question is: will the socalled pious people let others start over anew or will they keep those chained, whom Jesus longs to set free by loving though our hearts?
