Ages ago read a book Vicar of Christ by Walter F. Murphy.
The hero is a USMC officer in WW2 and Korea, then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He retires to a monastery after the death of his wife and is then elected Pope.
It’s actually a good book, told from the POV of those who knew him. “Francis I” is totally radical and the book, I think is the author’s “if I were Pope”.
I think it’s out of print but it’s a good read.
