In his September 20, 1896 encyclical Fidentem Piumque Animum, Pope Leo XIII declared:
The form of prayer We refer to has obtained the special name of “Rosary”. As though it represented by its arrangement the sweetness of roses and the charm of a garland.

Is this the first time that a papal encyclical mentioned the history of the name Rosary?

1569 A.D. - Pope Pius 5 - “Dominic looked to that simple way of praying and beseeching God, accessible to all and wholly pious, which is called the Rosary, or Psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in which the same most Blessed Virgin is venerated by the angelic greeting repeated one hundred and fifty times.” Source: papalencyclicals.net/Pius05/p5consue.htm
