Hello everybody
I am a Filipino and it’s a fact that Philippines is the biggest catholic nation in Asia and one of the biggest in the world. Filipino catholicism is more like inLatin America due to our shared history of Spanish colonization.
Im just wondering and very curious, what is your thoughts or opinion about Filipino catholicism especially from you people living in the west?. Have you gone to the Philippines to atleast experience it?Have you experience some Filipino catholic traditions like celebrating christmas or holyweek here or religiuos fiestas?

Also i want to hear your thoughts regarding this following points.
  1. Filipino diaspora is so great. There are almost 10 million migrant Filipinos living and working outside the Philippines in every country and continent most of them are catholics. Have you met any Filipino catholics? How are they involve in your local church in your country? Are they good catholics as per your standard?
  2. For my fellow filipinos now living in the secularized west, how are you adapting in a secular environment? Does your religiousity also declining?
  3. I read somewhere that Filipinos are the new Irish because of the diaspora world wide and level of religiousity. Do you think its true or this will be true?
  4. In relation to the 3rd point, Ireland long ago was poor but was very traditionally religiuos. Irish people also emigrate due to poverty to search for greener pastuer( correct me if im wrong). Now Ireland is rich but gripped by secularism just like other European nations. Poverty is rampant in the Philippines now but the economy is growing fast like most of Asia. What if Philippines becomes a developed nation in the future? Do you think filipinos will lost their faith also? Is there any study in relation to this?
5.Cardinal Tagle from Manila, Phil was considered a strong candidate for papacy (papabilli) in the last conclave (2013) but they say he was too young for the position. What if he gets elected in the future? What do you think of a Filipino pope?
  1. The Catholic Church in the Philippines are clashing with Duterte and his tentacles nowadays --refer to the news for the details-- but this topic is broad and difficult so PLEASE DONT refer to this one. Hahahahahaha pls just focus on the above topic.
Pardon me for my too many questions. Im just a curious man and nobody here in our place that i can ask fo
Hoping for your kind and informative opinions.
God bless us and happy new year 2018

I can only answer the #5 question.
I frankly do not care where the next Pope(s) is from. As long as he is doing his job. We are all children of God. And that is more important then where someone comes from. ❤️

In 1521, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition arrived in the Philippines.

On 16 March Magellan reached the island of Homonhon in the Philippines, with 150 crew left. Members of his expedition became the first Europeans to reach the Philippine archipelago.

You are right. Spain came afterwards. It was Miguel Lopez de Legazpi from Mexico. He landed at Cebu on Feb. 13, 1565.

I’ve four best friends, one of them is from the Philippines. She is one of the best Catholics I know 🙂

I’ll take question 1:
Have you met any Filipino catholics?
I know one Filipino Catholic.
How are they involve in your local church in your country?
The person I know attends Mass even on non Holy Days of Obligation and their child is involved in the choir at their parish I think.
Are they good catholics as per your standard?
?? Attending Mass and being involved in the Parish is great, but they are living with a partner who they are not married to. I’m not sure of their annulment status - they are divorced.

I am Catholic, British and a permanent resident of the Philippines. I have been married to a filipina for more than 36 years and most of my friends are filipino.

Things that strike me are:
Filipinos are very devout Catholics.
On the other hand they are among the most superstitious people I have met and they don’t realise that superstition is a sin. In fact I have come across only a few people here who actually know the Church teachings. From my observations filipinos are born into the Catholic faith and once baptised and confirmed that’s it. I don’t see the Church or the parents teaching the children about the faith which I find sad.
They absolutely believe and are devout but in reality very ignorant about their faith.

I’m not Filipino, I’m American, but I know some Filipino Americans, and some Filipino Canadians, as well as some Filipino born folks. Most of the Filipino people I’ve met, in addition to being awesome Catholics, are also very kind.

We have an interim Filipino Priest. He is way to laid back. Some here on this forum would raise some red flags as it concerns Liturgical Abuse.

But this Priest is a God Send compared to what we did have.

Filipino Catholics are the lifeblood of our archdiocese (Vancouver). They are extremely devout and it’s thanks to them that our churches are packed. St Mary’s in East Van has 7 Sunday Masses often packed to standing room only… probably 80-90% Filipino. St Patrick’s, a traditionally Irish parish, is now predominantly Filipino… a shrine has been added off to one side with a very Filipino flavour. I love the fact that Filipinos reverence priests…always a bow, and touching the priest’s hand to the forehead.

I read somewhere that Filipinos are the new Irish because of the diaspora world wide and level of religiousity. Do you think its true or this will be true?
I most certainly think it is true.

I have met many Filipinos in my life time, and their devotion to Christ and his church is an inspiration for me.

There were many Filipinos I served along side of in the US Navy, and here in Terre Haute Indiana we have a thriving Filipino community with most being quite successful in their professions. Not only do I see them at mass or the adoration chapel, but their children, even the adult ones, are there too.

I see a lot of enthusiastic Filipino Catholics in the USA. I think it’s great.

I also think it would be great if we could have Popes from all over the world eventually. It seems like for such a long time, one small region had a lock on them. Granted, there were some great Popes in that lot, but we need the perspectives of many nations going forward.

I would have liked to see Cardinal Sin as Pope. Both because he was a great guy, and because…that name 😃

I have many Filipino friends. One, in particular, is an anonymous donor of many things, many expensive things that Father needs for the parish. He does it on the quiet, and is very humble. A fine man.
One more thing: Filipino children don’t seem to ever disrespect their parent, embarrass their parents, pr abandon their parents. The family is strong in that culture.
Also a high value on education.

I’m specifically interested in answering number 4.
I think most Filipinos will abandon their faith if they can have what they want without God (which is not true), the main reason is, well as stated by other posters above they don’t really have any understanding about the Catholic teaching which serves as a foundation.
I never had any pleasant experience meeting Filipinos, and you well changed it. Please don’t let your nation succumb to secularism. Tell them the truth of the gospel, preferably do so by speaking within a position of power. (Being rich is one example)
I’m also quite curious what’s with this Duerte guy? Is he a great man that is a relief to the people? Or is he just some guy who wants to make the country his? And what did he do to become such man?
Cheers mate!
From your Catholic brother in Indonesia

My dear wife of 16 years is a Filipina, and a Catholic. I know her, her family back in the Philippines and her friends here in the US. They seem pretty devout (I’m not one to judge). They tend to keep to themselves whenever possible. Thistle’s got a point, many seem to be poorly informed about what the Catholic Church actually teaches. Filipino Catholicism has a very strong cultural component, in my opinion.

Do you know any Aglipayan or Episcopalian Filipinos? Do they tend to be different from Filipino Catholics in any meaningful way?

Filipino citizen here. I have a different take. While there are still many devout Catholics, many are cafeteria types. I’m a millennial living in Manila and from an upper middle class, educated demographic. Most of my peers are Catholic but many if not all are the liberal type. Many people here attend Mass every Sunday but are into pro gay and feminist and reproductive health stuff. Many people also have premarital sex and shack up, whether rich, middle class, or poor. It is also like in the West. There are devout priests I have encountered, but then again also espouse socialist mindsets. I guess the situation of being a majority Catholic country and all these things are a paradox.
