I’m looking for some good movies (or even documentaries) on the early church, whether focusing on events, people, saints, etc. The first couple of centuries, through Augustine.

I’ve seen Restless Heart on Augustine, and I’ve seen the AD Bible tv series, which was really great and much more Catholic-friendly than I expected.

This is not exactly on-topic, but there is a great old Italian film about Saint Francis - Francesco - Giullare di Dio. It is available on YT here:

It does not count as early Church I guess, but still a good film, and not without humour. 🙂

God bless, V.

Quo Vadis

I saw this film in high school and was greatly affected by it.

There is a movie Full of Grace which came out last year, I have not seen it but it has positive reviews. Full title is “Full of Grace: The Story of Mary the Mother of Jesus”. Not to be confused with an older movie called “Maria: Full of Grace” which is totally different.

I mention this because although the title says it is about the life of Our Lady, the review which I read indicated that it is really just as much about the life of the early Church as seen in the actions of the Apostles, as they begin their ministry of preaching the Gospel.

There is this movie called ‘‘Agora’’. It takes place in the 4th century Egypt. It shows characters such as saint Cyril of Alexandria.

Unfortunately, the movie is quite anti-christian. 😦

this is a dated thread however I recommend seeing Full of Grace. I just watched it twice,
beautiful. you also get a sense of the early church forming.

This site has just what you are looking for, but you have to subscribe. Check to see if your parish has a subscription so they can give you the password. Many do. FORMED is Catholic, whereas sites like Netflix just promote secular humanism so you might want to consider dumping the latter for the former.

I finally did watch “Full of Grace”. To be honest I hated it. For one thing, it is full of super-tight closeups of the actors’ faces, and that really irritates me after a while. That prolonged bit with Mary staring directly into the camera, with that strange expression on her face, that gave me the creeps especially. Also, there were a lot of “arthouse cinema” gimmicks which I felt didn’t work, such as the repeated flashbacks, using deliberately overexposed film images with creepy-sounding voice-overs. It’s not that I don’t like arthouse films; I just don’t like it when someone tries to do that kind of thing, but does it badly.

My biggest complaint, though, was in the depiction of the apostles. They spend a lot of time just sitting around a table, complaining about how many problems the church has, and bemoaning the fact that they don’t know what to do. St. Peter, in particular, was shown as confused and indecisive. As I recall, he spent several scenes just sitting on the ground because he was discouraged and didn’t know what to do. What a very different portrait from what we see in Acts of the Apostles - after Pentecost, they are always full of zeal and energy, as the Holy Spirit inspires and directs them.

I recommend trying it again! maybe?

Full of Grace, on the life of Mary post Resurrection, was so tender. I could imagine this to really be Mary!
a movie critic I am not, but will offer this review from CNA

I appreciate indie films as they step out of Hollywood. in this case, this film maker, shares a bit of the inspiration and grace he received to make this film. I do not know if he is Catholic.

You bring up a good point to consider. that about the depiction of the apostles. I had not thought about this until you mentioned. in the film Peter did appear a bit lost it seems; the forming church no direction. some of this may be from the letters (to the churches) of St Paul. ? just a thought. watching the film again I guess. 😃

A blessed Lent to all!

Maybe. I actually really liked what the filmmaker was trying to do. I enjoy films which are slow-paced, and have a contemplative feel. And I appreciate seeing a depiction of Biblical characters which makes them seem flesh-and-blood. Perhaps I was just in the wrong frame of mind when I watched it.

I don’t know if I will ever be able to accept the film’s depiction of St. Peter though. I really envision him as being vigorous and decisive - after the event of Pentecost and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. I don’t see any justification for him being so aimless and indecisive.
