Is it proper for the cantor to give a blessing to the assembly after the priest has given his final blessing at the end of Mass?
I’m one of three cantors in our small church, and recently the other two cantors, after the recessional hymn is concluded and the priest has processed out of the church, have routinely begun to say something like “Have a blessed day” or “May God’s blessing be upon you.” It’s been my experience as a Catholic that after the priest gives the final blessing he leaves the church while the recessional hymn is sung, and affter the hymn is concluded the assembly leaves quietly with no further comment from the cantor. Thank you for answering my question.
