Great! 👍

Although you might want to run it by the English teacher, to clean up the very few spelling and grammatical errors, before giving it to the kids. 😉

Do you allow the kids to explain their answers? I think if I were doing this exam, I’d want the opportunity to explain some of my answers, instead of just categorical “true” or “false”.

For example, in number 21. If a Catholic accepts evolution they must believe God immediately creates the soul. This is False, because we must believe that God immediately creates the soul, regardless of our stance regarding the theory of evolution - it is not only those who accept the evolutionary theory who must believe that God immediately creates the soul. 🙂

  9. Please list two of the Ten Commandments.

Part IV Essays Please pick 4 of the six essays. See last page for essay rubric (5 points each)
  1. Please explain the Bible verse Matthew 16:17-19 (Jesus gives Peter the keys) Please include the Catholic doctrine put forth in this verse as discussed in class.
Peter is given a singular office as leader of the Apostles. He had revelation from God that enabled him to identify Jesus as the Christ. This is when the office of the papacy was pronounced.
  2. Please explain the difference between the Protestant doctrine on justification and the Catholic doctrine.
There is no single doctrine on Protestant justification, but the tradition one is of faith alone, that works are not salvific. This is contrary to the end of James 2, in which he says as a person is dead without both body and spirit, so too is faith dead if separated from works. Efficacious works are done by the power of the Spirit, cooperating with our Spirit. Without Christ’s work on the cross, our works could never have had permanent salvific benefit, which is why sacrificing animals in the OT is no longer necessary. The power of the Cross flows through us when we exercise good works, and the power of the Cross is definitely of salvific value.
  3. Please explain the Church’s teaching on knowing the existence of God. Please include an explanation on the proof from causality.
  4. Please explain the Catholic response to the Protestant doctrine of sola scriptura.
While Scripture does contain God’s divine revelation, it is not only God’s divine revelation. Tradition is also part of divine revelation. Both Scripture and Tradition flow from the “same divine wellspring” as Dei Verbum stated, and form a singular deposit of faith. Paul spoke of holding to the faith whether it be passed in writing or orally. The ECFs also held to this belief. The Magisterium of the Church is the authentic interpreter of all revelation, and is not above this Word, but is it’s servant.
  5. Please explain “moral object” and why it is the most important aspect of Catholic moral theology.
  6. Please explain how infallbility helps us know the New testament canon.
If the Church is not infallible, then the very books of the Bible are unreliable. For infallibility belongs to God alone, and thus we can trust that through the Church, who passes on the message of the Spirit, we are able to know what belongs in Scripture. The first centuries saw the sorting out of which books belonged based on usage in Church and among the bishops.

  1. Mary had other children other than Jesus.
I find this statement ambiguous.

If you mean *biological *children, the answer is no. However, since we believe Mary is the woman in Revelation 12, according to verse 17 she does have other children: “Then the dragon became angry with the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring, those who keep God’s commandments and bear witness to Jesus.”

Also, what do you mean by question #7? Do you mean Jesus was ignorant that there would be a second coming or he was ignorant of *when *it would take place?

I find many of the questions (even T/F) have multiple answers depending upon how the question is read.

For example
Capital punishment is never permitted by the Church.

True… it is only permitted by the State. or
False… the State has the authority, and the church does not condemn it’s use.

or
40. What sacrament is necessary for salvation
a. baptism
b. Communion
c. anointing of the sick
d. Confession

None of the above. Baptism is the normative method, but God is not limited to this. There is the possibililty that even unborn infants may be saved.

I guess I would have to have taken your class to determine how you wanted the questions answered.

True/False should be have the options

True
False
Both
Neither
Other

This test to me is more about Catechism than theology. Do you teach religion or theology?

Funny you mentioned that–a student today(taking the exam) asked about Mary’s children–yes the question is meant to mean biological children–

Jesus, being God had infused knowledge and aquired knowledge. Because he was a Divine Person he wasn’t

ignorant of anything. Pope Benedict XV via the Holy Office said one CANNOT say Jesus was ignorant of certain things such as the second coming–

No,the Church teaches that baptism is necessary. Council of Trent “If anyone says baptism is not necessary for salvatio let him be anathema.” So, it is proper to say baptism is necessary–I agree it is normatively necessary. There are exceptions, (baptism of desire)etc. But we are speaking in the normative way just as the council did.

What kind of religious ed did these kids get before your class? How much are they required to learn in your class in one year? What is left for them to know after your class unless they want to be priests?

I would be scared to send my kids to your class even if I believed! I would be afraid they would wind up hating religion.:o Sorry, but it just seems like an awful lot of material for kids in freshman year high school to be expected to know when I see posters here who can’t answer some of these questions from looking at other threads. And, I don’t think they are in high school either. What happens to their ego if they really love God and are good kids and fail your class? What if they decide they should just pack it in?

Ya, I know actually teaching them the authentic Catholic faith is so dangerous.

P.S. your “WHAT IFS” can be turned around on you–"what if they never are exposed to Catholic teaching(especially in today’s church) what if they love the faith more because they are getting actual reasons for what they believe–what if whaT IF

How are the kids doing, in the class? Are they handling the material okay? How many of them passed your test with 80% or more? 🙂
