Well, version 2.0 of XIV comes out later this month. For those that aren’t aware, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is the second iteration of this MMO RPG. The first version got terrible reviews, had terrible sales, and the company has spent the last 3 years reworking, retooling, and overall revamping this game. The new version launches on August 27. It’s still set in the same world, but I believe it’s 5 years(?) in-game after the first one. I played version 1 for about six month off and on. It was entertaining, in my humble opinion, but I see why it was trashed by most critics and players.

Anyone planning to pick it up?

Any idea what class/job you want to play?

I’m thinking about giving the new one a try. I’d like to see what improvements they’ve made. I’d like to give Archer a try this go around, and probably take Bard as my job once it’s high enough.

Nah. I prefer the older FF games. That said, I’ve never actually played anything newer than FF7, but the more explicitly turn-based games seem more my style. (Even ATB is a bit much for me)

The only console FF games I’ve played to completion are 7, 13, and Tactics Advance. I also played a bit of 12. My main experience with FF is actually the other MMO in the series, 11. I played that for about 4 years (off and on).

I like turn based games more, as they’re more my pace, but the stories of the newer games (MMO’s included) tend to be really interesting to me. I’m debating if I want to pick up a used PS3 or 360 again so I can play 13-2 and 13-3. They both look pretty fascinating.

I don’t mind the way the MMO’s work, though, because you’re rarely dealing with anything unexpected. The monsters have set patterns of attack, various timed responses, etc. It makes it really predictable on how to deal with them. Plus, there are not random encounters in an MMO, so unless you get cornered where you shouldn’t be, you rarely have to fight something you didn’t intend.

EDIT: Oh, and for reference. I’ve played I, II, III, IV, V, VI and VII. I’ve finished III. I’m working on VII right now (got it on Steam :D). And after that, I’ll give IV another shot. I was scared off at first because ATB came as a shock to me. But I’ve warmed up to it, now, and have decided to give it another chance.

Yeah, I played 7 with it turned off. I actually can’t remember if I had a choice of it in 13 or not, since it’s been two years since I played it. When I played Chrono Trigger last fall, I played it with the ATB on. It certainly adds a certain level of excitement to the game, even if one’s more prone to mistakes in the process. I almost kind of like that aspect of it, nowadays.

I loved XI, I’d still play it if It were free, but I just couldn’t get into XIV… We’ll see what the reviews say, but I can’t see myself giving it another shot at this point.

As I understand it, they’ve taken a number of queues from XI for the revamp. They’ve reintroduced a number of the classic jobs and monsters. I think they’ve also improved a lot of the various travel systems, and if I’m not mistaken, combat has been updated, as well. Also, the UI has been overhauled, although I cannot vouch for whether it’s improved or not.

Despite the menu-heavy focus, I actually really liked the XI UI. It’s good to know that they are taking keys from XI, since it’s still going strong. With that in mind, I might just give it a shot. I assume they haven’t gone free to play yet though, right?

I would be highly surprised if they went free-to-play. This game has a massive debt to recover, and I can’t see micro-transactions doing that. It’s essentially been developed twice. Given that XI has gone for 12(?) years now without the need for switching models, they don’t seem to have much incentive to do so for XIV.

I would expect there to be some sort of 30-day deal with trying the game out. Also, if you had a 1.0 account, from what I understand, they’ll let you download the new client without charge. It’s worth looking into.

Yeah, but I can’t really justify the monthly expenditure, especially with Guild Wars 2 being FTP…

We’ll see. After you’ve had a chance to play it, maybe you could start another thread about how well it’s improved ^^

FFXI is all the MMO Final Fantasy I need. And if not for EvE Online I would probably still subscribe to it.

BRD/WHM, in case anyone is curious.

Heh, as long as we’re comparing jobs, I was usually a BLM/RDM or a BLM/WHM. I was working on BLM/NIN before I quit. It would have been a rockin’ combo ;).

Yay, that it’s supporting traditional marriage, but booooo that they’re considering letting same-sex in at a later date. There have been massive debates on the beta test forums over this. Seriously, people are getting called all sorts of names (e.g. bigot), threads are being deleted, and it’s turned into a huge problem.

I wouldn’t be surprised if (and kind of hope) marriage gets yanked altogether just to stop the controversy from spreading to the real game. If people want to role-play out fake weddings for their in-game characters (opposite or same-sex), SE can’t stop them. I just hope the developers don’t cave in and add “official” same-sex marriage because it’s such a real life issue for some people.

If they do end up adding it at some point, I don’t think it’d stop me from playing the game (it’s a thing you actually have to seek out to encounter in the game), but I think official sanctioning of it would “poison the well” a bit for me, so to speak. Frankly, though, this game is already being given a second-chance at life, so I will be a little surprised if they throw something as controversial as the same-sex marriage debate into their game.

Hi epiclotus,

Believe it or not, I was just thinking of starting this very thread! 😃

I’ve been looking for other Catholics to play with, or at least nice, friendly people. Too often, people playing online are demeaning, rude and unhelpful. Not to mention the vulgar language used. It would be nice to find other gentle souls to play with.

Let’s play if we get a chance! 😉 I am also looking forward to ARR.

Peace,
RTz

That would be great! I’m going to be starting on the Leviathan server tomorrow for the last part of the beta test, and I anticipate staying there once the game goes live at the end of the month. I’ll post my character’s name once that happens. 😃

Well, the Beta Test is done with. All in all, it was pretty fun. The combat is quite intuitive and very action-y. The revamped graphics engine is fantastic, and everything in Gridania where I was playing felt much more open. I’m frankly quite impressed.

The only downsides are some coarse language (with a fantasy twist), and the occasional skimpy outfit. They used the term “bloody” a lot; I think they were going for a British flair with the language choices (there was a distinct accent in the text). I thought this was being blasphemous at first (sacrilegious reference to Christ’s blood), but apparently nobody actually knows where the term comes from. The best theory is that the word comes from “the blood”, in a derogatory reference to the nobility (blue bloods, or some such). Still, while it seems it’s not a sacrilegious term, I understand it’s still an intensifier on par with “f—ing” in the UK, and they also use bizarre word transformations like “godsdammit” and such. Given the fantasy setting, I’m not taking it as blasphemy against (the One True) God, but they are certainly disrespectful of their own (fictional) gods!

As for the outfits, there are a handful of them that the designers have released that would certainly be skimpy or immodest in real-life. I would say a teen with an over-active imagination and/or sex-drive might have some mild issues. Just a heads up if anyone plans to let their kids give the game a whirl. It applies to both male and female characters, I might add.

The negatives aside, the storyline seems to be quite interesting so far. There’s a real feeling of mystery to the game, and the opening cutscene alone is incredibly epic. I’m really looking forward to uncovering the plot of this game.

So far I’ve made it to level 10. I went with an Archer on the Behemoth server, named Simon Fletcher. Give me a /tell in game if anyone here signs up. The game launches next week!

I agree with you that the game is really fun and, unfortunately, very addictive :hypno:

As for the outfits, I have not really noticed them too much (been focused on lvl-ing up char so I noticed the monsters a lot more :p) nor have I heard much coarse language, at least not in the world chat. Perhaps it depends on which world you’re on as well. I’m not currently in a FC as well so cannot comment much on that.

One thing I do notice is the ability for a character to be in smallclothes, which is like you mentioned may not be good for “teens with an over-active imagination and/or sex-drive”. For the most part people wear various costumes though so I don’t really notice it all that much.

The interesting thing about the storyline is that…I don’t really find it all that interesting…likely because I was so focused on lvl-ing up my char during the beta period that I didn’t really bother to read a lot of the dialog. Only during the movies do I really pay attention. From the bits and pieces that I’ve gathered, though, the story does not really grip me all that much. I guess this is different from your standard Final Fantasy where you follow the story of every character very closely and can develop an attachment to them. The characters also seem very typical so far (the puffed up princess, her mysterious guardian, secret evil person summoning monsters, standard JRPG fare, etc…). Maybe I will be able to appreciate the story more in the final game since I won’t feel so rushed to do and learn everything in such a short period of time.

For all the crazy lvl-ing though, I managed to get to 15, and even almost reached 16 in about a day. 😃 I am definitely looking forward to this weekend!
