I was just wondering if the Church has a stance on Final Fantasy and related games? Now, I wouldn’t stop playing these after checks watch ten years even if I was told to. Couldn’t pay me enough to kick the RPG habit. But by my calculations, and if the people who yell at me on street corners are right and I do become what I play, I have cast 3,672,891.2 black magic spells in the last decade. And I’m just wondering if FF and related things ever hit the notice of the church beyond Dungeons and Dragons and related items, which I could not see myself getting into.

It’s just a game, so there’s nothing wrong with playing it.

There is something very wrong with your statement that you wouldn’t give it up. When Christ says that you must give up all that you have to follow Him, He doesn’t mean that we literally are supposed to live on the streets. He does mean that we must be at all times prepared to give up anything and everything for Him. In fact, the parable of the rich man is all about this. The rich man in Matthew 19 is told by Christ he must give up all his posessions to follow Christ. Is this because there is something inherintly evil with posessions? No, but it is because Christ knew that the man wouldn’t give up the posessions for Him. We must remove any stumbling blocks from our paths. If Final Fantasy is something that you would never, ever give up for Christ, that is a really big problem. He will not ask us to give up everything, but He will ask us to give up what we will not give up.

You really need to pray about this. I’d especially ask the intercession of St. John of the Cross. Remember, you don’t need to give up the games, but you do] need to be able to give them up if for some weird reason it were ever necessary.

There’s the church telling me what is bad for me to enjoy, then there’s a deity speaking to me about it. I’m more talking about the church slapping someone’s hand for reading Harry Potter because it involves magic, not because it’s in the way of a following.

Well for one thing, God speaks through His Church.

But the Church has never slapped anyones hand for reading Harry Potter, or anything of the sort. The Church just doesn’t make statements about this sort of thing. She doesn’t tell us what to enjoy or not to, aside from things that are actually sin. When it comes to what shows to watch, games to play, or movies to see, the Church doesn’t make statements about what to do. Every now and then a recommendation may be made, but not a binding statement.

Well, I’m making up a possible example there. And as you all know, I’m not what people call a fundamentalist Christian and I see nothing wrong with doing things that you enjoy. Trying to convert gays, not my outlook or my style. I think there are points still outside marriage in a relationship where sex is just fine, and I think single parentage is fine, and on and on. And…that’s kinda just me. So…and I think I lost my thread here…I’m okay with any and all forms of entertainment that have actual effort put into them (as a writer, a lack of effort is the only thing that irks me). I was just wondering if it had ever been touched on.

Of course, I would venture to say that FF is pretty below radar, especially in America.

If you choose to believe these things, it is very important that you make sure to inform your conscience. God holds us to our conscience, but He expects us to inform it. You have probably seen here on these forums, and in your life in general, folks telling you that those things are just not ok. As Christ said, “If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.” In other words, you’ve been told about these things, so you owe it to God to really seriously consider them and research them. If you come to the conclusion that everyone is wrong on these things after really considering it prayerfully, then God won’t hold it against you, But He will not look kindly on a person who has been told of such things and refuses to consider and investigate them. I’m just warning you because you’ve already been warned by folks no doubt. It really does matter if you try to find the truth. God doesn’t judge us on or success, but He does on our effort.

From Jimmy Akin about RPGs
From Jimmy Akin about D&D

Long story short there is nothing wrong with RPGs, although some of them can be bad influences, therefore not all RPGs are meant for all audiences. They can be played incorporating sin into it, (but so can Halo.)

RPGs aren’t serious enough right now for it to even show up on the magesterium’s radar.

Use an informed conscience to deteremine whether you should be playing it. Does it lead you to sin: lustful thoughts, profanity, obsession with violence, etc?

On a personal note I would be more worried about the lack of ability to give it up. Addiciton to video games is something I face and it is very real. We must be prepared to give up everything for God.

I have alot of solidly orthdox Catholic friends who play final fantasy, and Dungeons and Dragons, and other RPGs. There is nothing wrong with them. Heck, i bet Jesus would play them.

Are you calling “Holy” Black Magic?

😛

Final Fantasy provides hours of sword-swinging, Aeris-killing, Sorceress assasinating fun!

I think you’ll find plenty of us around here who play RPG’s…

I’ve got a regular Monday night D&D session going right now (well, not right now, since its a Wednesday morning, and the sessions are Monday nights…you get the point!) 😃

The point is this. What is ones disposition? One can play RPG’s both video game and table top and not be involved in any occult activity that would lead to such things as demonic oppression, obsession or possession. However, it is possible to take these things and “take them too seriously” and then cause yourself some problems.

For lack of better terms it is the difference between being stupid and not being stupid.

I’m a writer with an addiction to a good story. If the story sucks (or the gameplay is arduous) I can and will walk away from it. So I’m not totally addicted, and action games I can take or leave (I don’t like Halo, and while I do own GTA, I can pick up and play it and not get addicted because it really has very little story to it.

Now, whether these things are my speed is another tale.

But I don’t like to judge others at all. It has no bearing on my life.

Were your father to be an alcoholic, would you judge him? Would you tell him that he needed help?

I was thinking more about “Death.” 😃

Man, I tell you, I have Aeris’s theme on my itunes and I have to weep every time the randomizer hits it…(it’s amazing in orchestral form).

An FF8? That came so close to greatness without ever grabbing hold. I loved Laguna though, and I’ve got The Man with the Machine Gun on the tunes list too.

I have an acquaintance like that, but I just don’t see it as the same thing. I don’t want to derail the thread, though, if you want to discuss it please PM me. Thanks.

My only point is that judging is not always a bad thing. It depends on what sort of judging you are doing.

In any event, my previous point had nothing to do with judging others, just with judging yourself. I don’t judge you. I may judge statements or actions of yours, but then only in the sense that I would warn you or disagree with them. But I don’t judge you and where you are or how you feel or where your heart is in terms of your journey with God.

A friend sent me Celes’ Theme and I had to go have an emergency replay of the best RPG ever. I’m hopeless.

Oh the memories. I agree with you there. That game had more emotion than most. The only Final Fantasy that had anything remotely to do with the church was Final Fantasy Tactics which was the hardest game ever and also storywise comparable to FFVII.

However, I wasted so many hours of my life that I could have been doing so many other productive things. I am an extrovert but those RPG games made me way introverted since it would be either a choice of going out with frineds to play or play my rpg game by myself. Guess what I picked. There are so many more productive things than video games. When I one day have children I don’t know if I want them having video games like that or if they do I am going to make strict rules on the amount of time they are allowed to play them. My parents were at one time against them and didn’t want to get them for us. It wasn’t until they divorced and had to compete for our love that we got them. So just be careul that the games don’t consume you.
