(Although our reasons are not merely a matter of preference or aesthetics.)
interesting statement.
What are your reasons if not preference or aesthetics? The same sacrament is confected. The same Graces apply.

Adopted Heir, be careful what you say here. This site doesn’t allow you to pit one form against the other.

Perhaps “Adopted Heir” would like to agree to disagree with you about that.

Then “Adopted Heir” apparently knows more than the Pope or the Magisterium of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church that was established by Christ himself.

Which is why that kind of question is a trap, Big Feet.

Anytime, you ask a question about EF preference that appears harmless on its face, I know where you’re going. 😃

How did you answer them? Were you able to hide your own preference for the EF?
That’s quite an amusing question.

I know some people who are FSSP parish members. They won’t ever go to an OF Mass. They were godparents for some friends in a “regular” parish and they wouldn’t even go to that Mass. They went to the EF mass at their FSSP parish, and then rushed to the “regular” parish for the baptism.

It’s hard for me to hold that against them when the FSSP priest himself says to avoid the OF Mass unless there isn’t any other option. Lol!

I’m not aware of any magisterial document that states that the actual graces received (or available to be received) at any two masses is identical.

I would have doubted that there is such a document, but since you state that the Pope has indeed stated such to be the case, please provide the document.

A statement was made. I asked a question trying to clarify said statement. If the door wasn’t opened, I wouldn’t have asked the question. “Adopted Heir” was the one who left the dangling accusation.

Anyways…I hope “MrBibbins” enjoys experiencing a different, rich, extraordinary form of our mass.

Hey come on now. Let’s cool the jets a bit. 🙂 I too wondered if the confession was the same or different so glad I finally learned today. Can’t go to an EF Mass any time soon to find out for myself 😦

Okay. 😃

I don’t think I left any accusations, dangling or overt. I don’t intend to pit the two forms against each other (thanks for the warning, I’ll try to be careful about my phrasing so it doesn’t come across that way, since perhaps I let an unintentional accusation slip by already). I don’t pretend or presume to know more than either the Holy Father or Magisterium. I didn’t elaborate on my reasons because, frankly, they weren’t germane to the topic of whether there is a significant difference between forms of Confession.

So if you’re interested in reading something not at all pertinent to the thread, okay. I’ll try to be brief, and please keep in mind I converted to Roman Catholicism first to the Novus Ordo form, and later to the Traditional. (As far as the debate that closed another thread about whether Novus Ordo is a slur, I don’t get that. My understanding was that before the MP in 2007, that’s what it was called, Novus Ordo Missae, as opposed to the Tridentine or Traditional Latin Mass, and I use them thus. EF/OF is a matter of brevity and commonality of use.)

There is a preferential measure to my decision–modern music that is often distasteful and irreverent, but also often downright heretical (one of the problems of allowing Protestant hymns to be sung at a Catholic Mass is that you risk letting Protestant heresies seep in unintentionally (or not unintentionally)). But please realize this: I am a black-and-white, right-or-wrong thinker, and it’s very uncommon that two different things are really the same thing. Applying this to the different forms of Mass, observing how each one is conducted and attended, I can deduce that there are at the very least two different mentalities, perhaps theologies, that are in my mind irreconcilable. That is, looking at the way people perform and assist at one form of the Mass, and based on observation of many such Masses, I cannot believe that people who attend NOM believe the same thing happens as at TLM. The different attitudes show different action taking place. When you act like it’s a good old country chapel hootenanny, I can’t reconcile that with what I know happens (and is evidenced in ambiance and behavior) at solemn, reverent Masses where people seem more to realize that God, the creator of heaven and earth and a really important guy, is physically and literally present right now. Based on how people conduct themselves (this is including the choice of music, attire, decor, and interpersonal behavior on the parts of both the congregation and the priest and servers) there are two very different understandings of what’s going on. It doesn’t have to look and feel like a funeral, but it is the unbloody re-presentation of a human sacrifice. Clapping and pop music are inappropriate (as examples).

Do I believe the NOM is invalid or sacrilegious? No, I’m not saying that. Perhaps these things could be solved by proper catechesis (another issue in itself). I believe that it has made a lot of very important things very vague that should be crystal clear. I believe that every time something starts to turn your attention toward God, something is done very quickly to refocus attention on yourself or your neighbor, or otherwise obfuscate the reality of the True Presence. These elements open the door for misunderstandings and abuses that are not a risk for the TLM precisely because of its clarity and uniformness. Another irritation is the false notion that the NOM was necessitated because people wanted a translation; in that case, they were given a false cure because it is not a ‘translation,’ it is in many ways, some (debateably) very significant ways, different from the older form.

I hope this clears up a few of my statements, while also making it clear that I do not intend to pit the two against each other or imply that one is invalid (although it leaves ample opportunity to make it doubtable).

(And let me say here that if I read as snarky or biting, that is also not my intention.)

And they don’t play. I need a firm hand. 😃
Ain’t that the truth! (about traditional priests not playing, not about you needing a firm hand :D)

For penance once I had an EF priest assign me 9 rosaries for 9 consecutive days in addition to my daily rosary. For the same sin a while later, an OF priest told me for my penance I needed to bless my dinner that night.

It made me want to keep going to that OF priest for confession 😉 Actually no, I need a firm hand, too. I appreciate the straight talk in an EF confessional.

Check out the thread on the FSSP priest who refused absolution to see how effective straight truth in the confessional can be.

Is that really a penance? It’s like telling someone to brush their teeth after dinner for their penance. Something they’re going to do anyway isn’t really penance.

Oh yeah. I saw that one. Good priest and obedient poster.

Yep. I’ve been to confession at both EF and OF churches, and the penance is always noticeably different.

Why would he ever need to hide his own preference for the EF? Especially in an EF parish surrounded by kids raised on EF? Who by the sound of it had never heard of the OF?

I don’t plan on my kids ever attending the OF if we can help it, so there’s no need for me to pretend I like it as much or more than EF. (Although our reasons are not merely a matter of preference or aesthetics.)
Adopted Heir, you are so right and after I read what you said, I realized that there are alot of people who have no clue about us traditional catholics, just as I have no clue about Coptic Catholics. The children at my parish and the young adults there have never been to a novus ordo mass, they think every catholic is like them. They think all children carry their rosary and say it when they get together on their own., They think all children drop into the church on their own to pray the stations, and fall on their knees at noon for the angelus, etc. They do know there are many Rites in the Catholic Church so I guess they think Novus Ordo is another Rite, I really don’t know what they think, I guess I’ll ask them.

Thanks 🙂 It seems like there’s a lot of talk about what we believe and do, but not a lot of knowledge. It’s similar to when I was Protestant, and other Protestants would tell me all the horrible idol-worship and Whore of Babylon stories about Catholics. (Only in a much less exaggerated style.) Lots of people tell us what we think but neglect to ask. I’m sure I do the same thing the other way around, too.

Could they think that because that is what they are being taught? If so, someone needs to step up to the plate and explain that there is no such thing as an Novus Ordo Catholic, just like there isn’t a rite, Traditional Catholic.
