GOOD NEWS!

I finally got a local Confessor.

He, and my precious Confessor confirmed that I am scrupulous, so he has applied some principles for me to follow.

However: what if I’m uncertain whether my Confessor is doctrinally correct in his explanation? What do I do?

Trust your confessor. He has formation in Theology and experience for dealing with these sorts of things. And if he misleads you, it’s on his soul, not yours.

Since they have confirmed that you are scrupulous, you follow your Confessor’s direction. Period. Assume he is doctrinally correct. Assume he knows more about doctrine than you do.

I would not worry about his explanation. Perhaps he explained it in a simplified way, or you may have understood it incorrectly, or perhaps you are simply predisposed to feeling uncertain (related to your scrupulous tendencies). You could ask him to explain it again, but trust him and do what he tells you to do.

For you, the only action is obey, unconditionally. At this point, you trust your confessor, and do not question him. Only then will you begin to heal.

You do not question or doubt his orthodoxy. You will assume that he is faithful. Period.

Further, do not question him HERE. Do not post your doubts or cross-check his advice, penances, or anything here or anywhere. Going forward, it’s between you and him, ONLY. If he tells you to say one Hail Mary, you will say one Hail Mary and be done with it.

Obey unconditionally.

Why give up the “precious Confessor?” That title instills much confidence.

colonel, sir

i think OP meant “previous” confessor

but you knew that 😉

Congrats. You made the first step to healing.

I have been there too, I am also scrupulous. I got a spiritual director who was my regular confessor for about a year before I pretty much got my scrupulosity under control.

I do not know what advice he has given you but I can take a educated guess. You need to have courage now and do whatever he tells you. You are going to feel uncomfortable at first. Trust me, you do not know better than your confessor. You just don’t. Even if he is only right 90% of the time, I can assure you that he is right more often than you when scrupulosity clouds your judgement. You know something is not right with you. That is why you sought help. Doctrine is not any issue here in regards to scrupulosity. Pastoral advice is what is center here and you must follow that advice. Have courage or you will not find relief from scrupulosity.

Can scrupulous people switch Confessors/Spiritual Directors? Moral Theology
You have already been advised by a priest not to post these compulsive scrupulosity issues on CAF. Just ask your confessor. One more thing… just ask your Confessor. God bless.
