Finding a Catholic Church in China?

Even though it is a ways away, I will be going to China this summer for a field school program with my university department.
From what I can understand there are two seperate Catholic Churches in China, the one loyal to the pope and the other governed by the government (I think)?
My question is, how do I find one that is loyal to the pope? I am having a hard time figuring out which is which!!

Also, just out of curiosity, what is Chinese Catholicism like? Will they use some Latin in the Mass so I can at least partially participate?

You don’t find it, if you could find it the government could find it and shut it down.

I have heard that it is not safe to ask about the underground Catholic Church. Have a talk with your priest about this and I am sure it will be confirmed.
 
I don’t even think you would need a dispensation from your pastor to not go to Mass on Sunday when you’re in China, as you cannot fulfill your Sunday obligation. While I praise your commitment to fulfilling your Sunday obligation, you’re not required to go to such lengths to do so.
 
Pray that God will lead you to where the Blessed Sacrament is in the area of China you will be headed for.

I hear it’s very secretive.

I missed this part of your post. I think you need to have a sit down with your priest about the do’s and don’ts of being Catholic while in China. You don’t want to wind up in jail…at best.
 
Oh wow I didn’t realize it was that bad.
So all of their cathedrals belong to the government church?

The only Masses that you could seek and still feel comfortable with are the ones celebrated in the embassies of foreign countries like Poland, Italy etc. My understanding is that westerners can have easy access to those. My suggestion is to talk to your pastor before leaving and ask for dispensation.

I think the situation is a bit more complicated than that. You might want to try contacting this person. She and her family are Catholics and have been living in China for a number of years. They go to Mass at the government approved churches and have lots of good descriptions and pics and sounds from Mass and various churches on their blog.
