Finding a Good Spiritual Director

What sort of process does one go through to evaluate a Spiritual Director? There are not very many Spiritual Directors near my area. I live in Costa Mesa, CA. The Sisters of Saint Joseph are fairly close and they have a Spiritual clinic for Spiritual Direction. A friend of mine encouraged me not to go to that one for fear that the nuns might be too liberal. How do people find spiritual directors?

I would ask your parish priest for recommendations. Then go to the Vocations Office of your diocese and ask for recommendations. I would only have a priest for my spiritual director, because of the availability of the Sacrament of Confession as well as the priest stands in person Christi. The spiritual director does not have to be a priest though.

Pray for direction as you are trying to find the spiritual director that God would wish you to have. My only counsel is that whomever you get as spiritual direcotor make sure they LIVE and BELIEVE in all of the Teachings of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.

That sounds smart. I was nervous because I felt that the priests might recommend me to talk to this woman at our church who does Spiritual Direction, who herself is pretty liberal. Although, if I insist that I would like to speak to a priest, that would remove my concern. :tiphat: Thank you.

When you do speak to your priest, I would mention to him that you wish for someone who is quite Orthodox meaning that they believe and live ALL that the Magisterium of the Catholic Church teaches.
