Hello

I think a really need a spiritual director to help me to find God’s will for myself. I’ve never had a SD and am somewhat scared about looking for one. What is the usual process? I don’t know any priests well and don’t really try to interact with them on any level. Is it normal to cold call a priest / priory / campus ministry and demand an SD? I tried that once and the priest kinda blew me off so I’m loth to try it again. I want to be able to tell a SD how pathetic I am and possibly salvage a vocation from the mess that is my life and not have him feel awkward, judge me, and want to get rid of me.

Do you have a favorite priest for Confession? If so, at the end of your Confession, you could bring up the topic of spiritual direction. Perhaps the priest may be willing to meet with you himself, or perhaps he will have a suggestion of someone else for you to see.

Here’s a great website dedicated to the subject.

Demand a spiritual director? Absolutely not! Request one? Sure.

It can be difficult sometimes to find a director. I would start with my pastor and ask him. Most pastors are busy and wouldn’t have time to take on a directee, but he may know of someone good.

If he can’t help, you might check with a monastery, convent, or retreat house in the area to see if they can either provide a director themselves or recommend someone.

You might also check with your diocesan vocations office and ask for a recommendation from them.

I agree! Go to your diocesan website and they should have a link for vocations and some contacts. That is what I did.
