I have searched the internet and searched some more as have several other parishioners. We wanted to buy new cassocks for our altar servers. They are PRICEY!

We then went looking for patterns. Heck, even some of the patterns are almost 100$.

If you find affordable ones, please let us all know!

It is 2012, $100 is not a lot of money for a quality garment.

Granted I don’t have any cassocks in my wardrobe, but I know how much slacks, blazers and dress shirts cost.

This person sells cassocks on ebay. They are actually very nicely made…a religious community in Asia makes them. They are great quality and value priced…they actually look nicer in person than in the pics.

We are an extremely poor church in the poorest county of Arizona. Most of our families are retired. We do have a couple of families with children. 100$ for a cassock for a child is WAY over our budget. For those adults who serve, a cassock of 125-300$ if WAY over their budgets as well, and that doesn’t even include the surplices that go over them.

So some of us who sew were willing to make them, I can get black fabric discounted since I know someone in the fabric business. A pattern that costs as much as the ones I found is just WAY over my head. Our church budget is VERY TIGHTLY stretched as is.

Luckily our priest came with a great liturgical (the right word?) wardrobe.

Actually, I found some reasonably priced cassocks and surplices when I was trying to figure out how to spell surplices! I’m going to pass this on to the folks at my church.

What about contacting a wealthier parish and asking to buy their used cassocks second hand?

The patterns we found were $45-$80. That is a LOT of cash for a pattern.

If money is such an issue then why even consider cassocks? After all you need to have surplices to go with them.

You can find albs for under $80.

If you have instituted acolytes then I can see the need for the cassock and surplice, but if the servers are not instituted acolytes an alb can do what is needed especially if cost is such a burden.
