Finding God’s Will In your Life
Richard J. Hauser, SJ

-Jesus’ life was dominated by the desire always to do the will of His Father.

-Jesus teaches his disciples that this must also be their desire: “None of those who cry out Lord, Lord, will enter the Kingdom of God, but the one that does the will of my Father in heaven.” (Mt.7:21)

-Clarification on the meaning of God’s will. God does not have a master plan for my life which will be revealed to me. God desires I choose those alternatives in my life that are made for God’s Kingdom, for the love and service of God’s people. These alternatives are God’s will for me.

-God calls us through the gift of the Spirit within ourselves to make those choices that more directly foster His Kingdom on earth. Rejecting this is not a sin. Jesus did not condemn the rich young man for refusing to leave all and follow him. God’s will is God’s preferred way for our lives because it is our way to do the most good for the Kingdom. This will is the path to our greatest happiness and fulfillment.

Vocatation Discerment

If I am serious in my desire to know God’s will, it implies the following:

-Openness to get in touch with oneself, one’s fear, concerns, gifts.

-Openness to hear the word of God even when it is difficult to accept.

-Openness to continual reflection upon our faith experience.

-Openness to remove obstacles that are within us, preventing our hearing or accepting the word of God, the call of God.

-Openness to scruting of our responses to God, to people.

-Openness to face past failures with hope for the future.

-Openness to alternatives, to examing feelings towards any or all Christian lifestyles.

-Openness to the possibility of needing to head in the direction not orginally intended.

-Openness to personal prayer–to trust in God.
